Posting for a friend. This weekend he picked up a 17-4 8 3/8s in a two piece box, with the paper in excellent condition. Said it looks unfired.

The question is why the box has no printing, logo, border, etc, on the top.

Can anyone shed some light on it.

Cowboy:

If it is just a plain, dark blue two piece S&W box then it is likely one of the boxes used by the factory to return repaired/refinished guns. If/when the gun was new then it would have come with a box that had a proper end label and the usual silver bordered S&W markings on the top of the upper half of the box.

i have a 17-4 with the same type box as well, and it has the proper end label which denotes the usual and is numbered to the gun
