from what i have read online, the SW j frame rebound springs are 18lbs from factory. if i install a 15lbs rebound spring and keep hammer spring and every other spring stock. will it reduce the overall trigger pull weight? pros and cons?

I hated it. Felt like the gun wasn’t going to return fully. My advice: stay stock, shoot or dryfire a bunch to smooth it out (and strengthen your finger!).

That said, it’s cheap and reversible.

I second this. I bought two J Frames last year, put snap caps in and dry fired the heck out of them for a couple of weeks. Triggers smoothed out with no side effects. Dry firing also helped my accuracy with them. I still dry fire them and rotate them into my range rotation. I can't see any reason for me to do anything else to their triggers.

Which J Frame? I've left steel and Airweight guns stock, but I have a 317
1 7/8" Airlite that weighs 10.2 oz. Coupling that weight with the heavy trigger pull made for a gun I couldn't shoot. Replaced the 18# rebound with a 13# Wolff, Left the main spring alone for 2 reasons; One it's a 22 and secondly because I believe in one change at a time.
Much better, no problems.

any j frame, but i was referring to a 640 357 mag.....

OP, what you asked was if a reduced power rebound spring will lighten the trigger pull.

It will, but not by very much, especially compared to the hammer spring. It might also make trigger return hitchy or sluggish, or your finger apt to outrun the trigger at speed.

You can experiment with different weights and see how your gun responds, but don't expect much from a rebound spring swap alone.

Do make sure the innards are properly cleaned and lubed; that and consistent dry fire practice paired with live fire will do much to bring the tigger in line.

A Wolff j frame rebound spring assortment with 11# to 15# springs runs $11. My advice is to get one and play around with them. No permanent changes. At 13# I was impressed by the trigger pull improvement with no rebound issues. Not changing the main spring so no light strikes. FWIW I did clean and lube thoroughly while I had it open.

I tried them all, I liked the 14# rebound spring, the trigger pull is a little lighter, maybe one lb. with no problems.. I thought the J frame factory spring was 16#, and the K frame was 18#, I may be wrong.., I also put a drop of Lucus gun oil on all of the moving parts while I was under the hood.. Clifford.

Best to reduce BOTH the hammer and rebound springs. After you do a little polishing on the internals.

I have a 640-1, from the first production batch. Only things I have done to mine are to put on a set of Uncle Mike's rubber boot grips (sadly, long out of production), good cleanings, lubrication, and plenty of dry and live firing. The trigger has smoothed out a lot and given it's reliability and that I use it when I need deep concealed carry, I have not even considered messing with lighter springs.

Yeah I ordered a wolff spring set,
I'm going to try the 15 lbs spring, and see how it go's....

You should be OK. I have a 442 that i first changed the hammer spring and got a few ftfs. Put the factory hammer spring back in and changed the rebound to 14#, now have a 10.5 trigger pull that works just fine. It also helps that I have 6-700 rounds through it.

The instruction I received said never remove more than 1 1/2 coils from the rebound spring. I tried it. Did not perceive a difference and decided to go back to stock. I always prefer reliability over a lighter trigger.

kiki I have a s&w 360J 357mag solid cylinder version. The trigger was lets just say well over 13lbs on 2 of my trigger pull scales . SA pull was 7lb!

I bought the Apex Tactical J frame Kit . New firing pin and spring , main spring and rebound spring . Inside was cleaned well . parts added and lite sewing machine lube used . Ended up with a 7lb 3 to 5oz DA pull and a 2lb 4to 6oz SA pull before range time . Some shooter here said it will be too lite and unreliable but 300 rounds later some using wolf small rifle primers it fired 100% . This was bought as a possible may need handgun as I also have a 1990 taurus 85ss 38sp snubby bought new used mostly as a training handgun over the years with a bone stock trigger group that never failed to function reliably .
