I have been shooting a new to me SW 24-3. First time at the range after about 40 rds. the cylinder got real tight when cocking the hammer. The revolver would not cycle the cylinder in double action at all, so I got it home cleaned it real good and it still would not cycle properly. Under the star looked clean but a couple wipes with an oily wipe returned it to proper functioning. I took it out for another range session today and same scenario after about forty rds. I cleaned under the star (wiped) and it was back in business. The revolver functions fine other wise and is scary accurate. What can I do to remedy this? Would like to shoot more than a few dozen rds. without needing a clean up. Thanks for any help

Sounds to me like Dirty ammo. Not outside but unburnt powder falling under the extractor when you dump the emptys. Try holding the revolver upright when you extract, not pointing towards the ground, That way unburnt powder should stay in the shell casings. Change brand of Ammo or if you reload try a different powder.

I thought about that, but I don't see any unburned granules or any excessive soot, its happened with tite group and 2400, I will try upright ejection of the cases, I own a handful of SW .357s and 44s and never had this problem, If I Iook under the star I don't see excessive fouling, It must be very fine and cumulative as i shoot, One wipe with an oily cloth and its fixed? could be worse I guess, I'm gonna bring a magnifier and look real good next time thanks for the tip,
