SW top break model?

I have a hammerless top break S&W revolver in .38 SW, serial number 38979. The latch to open the revolver is a button on the top center of the frame behind the top strap. Finish is blued. Any idea on the production date and model number?

Sounds like you have a .38 Safety Hammerless 2nd Model. Made with 3 1/4, 4, or 5 inch barrels. The serial number range is 5251 to 42,483. Production dates 1887 to 1890. Yours may be made in 1890 and is an antique. Do not fire modern ammo in this antique.
