So there I was wasting time on the Bud's Gunshop website and notice that the SW99 9mm police trade-ins they were selling on their LE only site are now available to the general public on the regular site.

$289 Delivered with 2 16 round mags.

HMMM. About $100 less than a used G17. By most accounts a much better shooter than a G17, especially when shooting double-taps. And second strike capable.

HHMMMMMMM!!!!!

But I want a shorter grip for carry. CDNN sells the 10 round mag for the SW99c compact for $20 new.

So now I'm thinking of chopping the polymer grip down to fit the compact mags, kinda like a SW99C longslide. I'd get the longer sight radius and increased velocity (always a good thing in 9mm) of the 4 inch barrel, with the easily hidden grip frame of the compact. I'll have to sort out the attachment of the grip inserts, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Yeah, I know..."You'll never be able to give it away much less sell it after the conversion". Don't care. :p I buy guns, I don't sell them. A plastic gun to me is a pure tool, to be used hard and not babied.

Has anyone done or seen another SW99 grip chop? I've seen plenty of Glock chops and always thought they were kinda neat in a butt ugly but functional kinda way.

Kinda tempting at the sub $300 price. Yes, I'm still gonna order a 4553 TSW from Bud's, that's too sweet deal of a deal to let slide.

Get it and try it out before chopping it. You may like it the way it is.

You'll have to do JB Weld or something to keep the backstrap in if you chop it.

The backstrap attachment point for the compacts is in a different place then the full size so you may be able to us a compact backstrap and simply drill a hole in the frame to attach it. Since you'll already be hacking the frame what's one hole.

I just recently got a P99c and love it. I think a long barrel compact grip is a great combo as the barrel usually isn't as hard to conceal as the grip.

I chopped a Glock 19 to take Glock 26 mags. Was an awesome mod and was pretty much the only Glock I ever really liked. Now you're making me think about getting one of those SW99's (If only I could stand the mag release).

I have done this.
SW99 AS full size and reduced grip to compact size.
I measured both magzines (conmpact and full size) and simply removed the difference from the full size grip. I removed the back strap before hand and followed the contour of the original opening. I used a 3" hand held air powered cut off tool. Of course you loose the bevelled mag well when you do this, but you can work on that if it is important to you (it is not to me). i then fitted the back strap and epoxied it permanantly in place. I did have some shaping to perform in order to make it somewhat appealing to the eye.
What I now have is a 8+1 SW99 that conceals much better than my Kimber Pro Carry II. It really was not all that hard to do, but don't plan on much weight savings. I got approx. 1.75 oz less. Also, I made a good clean cut and can use the piece of removed grip for a spacer on a 12 shot mag if I wanted.

Reggie,
I'd love to see some photos of your conversion! Thanks for posting.

What a great deal this sale was ... I got one of the SW99s and oh what a great deal ... if your gonna experiment on a gun the SW99 is a great gun to try it on ... esp at that price
