SW9VE vs. SD9VE

Recently, I came across a brand new leftover SW9VE in one of my local shops for roughly the same money as they are asking for the current production SD9VE and SD40VE.

Question: Is there any reason at all to buy a leftover SW9VE instead of the newer SD9VE?

I only have an SD9VE, but supposedly the trigger on it is an improvement over the SW. Also, if you have any plans to mount a light, the SD has an industry standard rail whereas the SW would likely need an adapter to mount many of the current products.

I have the SW9VE, and - while there's nothing really wrong with the enhanced Sigma, I think the SD is an improvement. I've recommended a friend in the same position as you to get the newer gun.

With the SD9 VE you get a better trigger pull, a steel front sight and the front sight is attached more securely as well. I like the extractor set up better on the SD series too. The rail is also easier to find accessories for. It's really hard to beat the SD series.

Thanks very much guys. Thought I had something possibly worth putting on the Want List (the leftover SW9VE), but I think you've talked me out of it. The old style rail is not a big deal for me, but the other issues you've brought up are. I guess I just liked the more "business-like" look of it compared to the SD.

If all other things were equal (or better), I think the older SW is a bit more visually appealing to old traditionalist me than the SD. But what I would really like to find is a leftover new-in-box original SD with the black melonite slide. I really want to like two-tone guns but I'm still not quite there yet.

I agree with Erich.

My youngest son has an SW9VE that is 100% reliable, but we both agree the ergonomics, trigger pull and aesthetics are a bit better on my SD9VE's.

For the same price, I'd opt for the newer gun too.

Yep. SD is a re-designed and re-engineered SW. Fixed several problems. No more proprietary rail system, now Industry standard Picatinny. No more long, gritty trigger pull, now smoother, less pull weight, less pull distance, faster reset. Simplified extractor system, now a bulletproof "Rocker beam" extractor. Better grip design. Better slide design(SD's fit any M&P holster). Better sights(and as I understand it, now both front AND rear sights are metal. And M&P compatible, too!). And on top of that, STILL a really good price. Quite often under $300, with a spare magazine at several Sporting Goods stores. A really good working, good selling pistol.

I agree with the others, go for the SD. I recently had a neighbors SW40GVE completely apart, cleaning, replacing striker spring and removing pigtail spring. Trigger is still not as good as my SD40VE but its much better than it was. I like the looks of the SD better too, maybe its that ugly OD green frame.

As between the two, you should get the newer SDVE as it has a lighter trigger pull.

Better sights(and as I understand it, now both front AND rear sights are metal.

Can anyone confirm that the metal rear sight is now standard on all VEs coming off the line?

To the OP, sorry if I was hijacking your thread, but from the voluminous reading I've been doing, there doesn't seem, to me at least, any evidence that would indicate any reason to choose the SW9 VE over the newer SD9 VE. Well, maybe enough of a price difference might, but it would have to be major money for me.

No problem at all. I, too, am interested if the SDVE's now come with a metal rear sight. I hadn't heard anything about that (and I thought I was paying pretty close attention).
