Good evening,
Can you gentlemen please tell me if it is possible for a gunsmith with the correct tools to swap these two barrels on a 460 x-frame. Any info that you can give me as to why it can or can't be done would be most appreciated!

Shouldn't be a problem. It ought to go like any other barrel swap. Sometimes some fitting of various things is required, but any good revo smith can do it.

I appreciate your reply. I was mostly sure that I would able to have this done, but I wanted it confirmed. I came accross a decently priced 460v 5" barrel and I plan to make the swap.

Is there anyone out there who has made this swap, or knows someone personally who has.
Thanks.

Only Smith and Wesson can do the swap correctly.

These two model variations of the 460 have a crush washer which is placed under the flange of the barrel. The washer are sized (thickness) to correctly set the barrel to cylinder gap. They are an in house part and not available from the factory. The washers vary in thickness from .066 to .084; total of 7 different washers used.

Part Numbers are
(296440000 .066, 296450000 .069, 296460000 .072,
296470000 .075, 296480000 .078, 296490000 .081,
296500000 .084)

S&W does not sell the tools required to tighten the barrel. Each barrel length has a different tool, this is necessitated by the progress twist design used in the 460. The barrel is tighten by placing the tool in the barrel on these 2 models, SKU 163460 and SKU 163465.

It might take awhile too. I sent my PC 500 3.5" in last June, needed a new barrel as well as other stuff. I just got it back couple weeks ago. 8 months that is. It appeared they had a tough time removing the barrel, it was corroded on to the sleeve that is shrouded. They returned my old barrel in two pieces haha and replaced the shroud. It is now slightly off center CW (~0.3 mm) but shoots so beautifully. I missed this gun.

I think it might have went to a different gunsmith than would a S&W, it went to Thompson Center I believe.

It seems like tightening everything together in screwing the barrel/shroud assembly is somewhat of a shot in the dark - might be perfect, or slightly off

I appreciate this detailed response. Lots of information that I was not aware of. Though I already bought the 460v barrel (big regrets now), I may hold off on swapping it out with the 8 3/8"..

Thanks for sharing your experience. I've heard others tell similar stories about long turnaround times with sending their firearm back to S&W with varying results. Another reason I'm now considering leaving things how they are..

You may find it easier to swap guns with another person as opposed to doing the swap.

Curious did they send you the crush washer when you acquired the Model V barrel and shroud?

Unfortunately, no the barrel didn't come with the original crush washer.
