Please excuse me if this is a common question, but I'm new to Smith's and I couldn't find anything on a search.

Would it be possible to put in an 8 shot cylinder into one of the older 6 shot 627's? Is this just a matter of putting the new cylinder into the pistol, and checking for timing/endplay? Or is this a gunsmith only retrofit?

The reason I ask is that I've seen a few 686's for sale that come with two cylinders. One with the 6 shot, and a the 7 shot plus cylinder. I'm assuming that the same would be possible with a 627, and I would LOVE an older pre-lock 627 with an 8 shot cylinder.

627 six and eight shot cylinders don't interchange. An 8 shooter's barrel is screwed into the frame higher up further away from the axis of the cylinder.

Sorry,
Gil
