They put a metronome to shame.

Another favorite is when they get together with the Royal Marines drum line.

Top Secret is the name of the group.

I'm sorry; I need to be clearer. I was aware that that was the name, I'm just wondering why they would choose to call themselves by that name when there doesn't appear to be anything about them that is secret. Pardon my ignorance.

Regards,
Andy

I imagine they chose Top Secret because it sounds a lot cooler than Plumaged Percussionists in Short Pants! :)

I played in a marching band in jr hi and high school (trumpet, cornet and French horn). We performed for our school football games. I think props should go to whoever choreographed all that but that level of precision from a group seems like it would be impossible and especially for that long. I would love to know that gets done.

I have known several musicians that played in The Ohio State University marching band. All said the practice drills were brutal.

"Brutal" is the right word. Our band director was hoarse after every practice from screaming...and lots of times he was screaming at me. On one miserable occasion the mouthpiece fell out of my french horn. I will spare you the names he called me and his references to my heritage. I think he was a Marine Corps drill instructor in a previous incarnation.

Back in the 70s and 80s it seemed like "top secret" was a watchword in central Europe. I'm a little surprised it's hanging on all these years later. I don't think their idea of "top secret" coincidences with our American idea of what that means.

We were having trouble installing a new offensive play scheme and our coach made us sprint over to the band practice field. They were weaving in and out between each other with precision, making amazing formations, all the while playing instruments and not getting out of breath.

Our coach pointed all this out with the final comment "and you morons can't hit the gaps between the center and guard, and guard and tackle." All the band members, who had taken a break to listen, then howled with laughter.

I hated the band jocks!

PS. Once we were going to practice on the indoor field because it was about to come a frog strangler (major rain for the city slickers here). Coach sticks his head out the field house door and hears the band tuning up on their field. Coach screams, "you sissies, get out on the field and start doing up downs!"
