SWS Brass Deflector is now available

That's the difference. I've been shooting some of my firearms for over 40 years and currently shoot about 15k or more a year, including .22 LR, 9mm and .40 S&W. It's a rare outing that I shoot less than 500 rounds of .22 and another 200 rounds of 9 and .40. FWIW, my High Standard match .22 was built in '63 and my Garand in '43, rebuilt in '85. Everything I have is in excellent condition but not a single one is what one would consider "pristine". Pristine firearms have no character, they're just pretty.

I kept my Glock 19 when I retired, and that gun has thousands of rounds through it. It still looks like new. Fire it, clean it, periodically wipe it down and it still looks like it is brand new. I'm from the school of you take care of it and it will take care of you.

this was a post started about a great little product, a brass deflector...how did it get to be a pissing match over who takes better care of their equipment?? come on guys ...seems every post anymore turns into a bitch session...I'm here to learn and talk about these great rifles...

It's good to see everyone is receiving their brass deflectors so quickly and most have positive things to say about it.

Placement of the Picatinny Mount should not make a difference. I have the mount hanging a little bit off of the rail and it has never bothered me. I will look at increasing the length of the Shield as long as it does not impact the price of the Brass Deflector.

I do have some marring around the ejection port from brass bouncing back off of the Shield. If you look at the pictures in the first post you can see the marks on the upper. Take into consideration that we are dealing with hot brass being ejected at speed. I would prefer the Shield and the upper to take the abuse, rather than my extremities.

All of my firearms show some wear on them from use during shooting competitions and shooting classes. My mentality with firearms may differ from others and sometimes there is a conflicting point of view. All of the products that I create or use must fill a specific roll for me and cosmetics are the last thing I worry about, I am more concerned with function over form. If it happens to look good after all is said and done then that is just an added bonus.

I know that the products I create may not be for everyone and may not fill the same roll for you as they do for me. I stand behind my products and if anyone wants a refund they can email me [email protected] and I will get you taken care of.

We all have different views on firearms and the roll that they fill, but hopefully this thread can stay on topic and everyone will remain respectful towards each other.

I love the idea behind this. I admit I'd have more of a use for it on my 5.56, where I'm trying to save the brass to reload. I didn't read the entire thread, but noticed you mentioned that you wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a AR...any way of modifying it to work that way? I'd be in for the next batch if there was...never liked the bag-type brass catchers, but this has a lot of potential!

I'm almost positive that it would need to stand out from the ejection port significantly more on a 5.56. You'd have to have it out enough to clear the full length of the spent casing. That being said, there are 5.56 brass deflectors, (we use them in the military sometimes when qualifying) they attach to the carrying handle and just protect the casings from flying backward and upward.

Make a nice double back tape on aluminum covering for that area and I'll buy two of them also. Put your logo SWS on it to spruce it up and anodize it black

There are already brass deflectors available for the AR15 platform.

well. I thought about it overnite and I'm going to order one....I think the electrical tape would be my solution. Again, I'm pretty inexperienced compared to most of you, but i was getting the brass bounce back at me off of the indoor stall walls and saw this product as an answer to that. I gotta tell ya.... that was nothing compared to the percussion effects of the other people shooting their cannons close to me. I need to find an outdoor range....

All this concern about cases marring the lower mystifies me. I've put about 5k through my 15-22 since I put my other brass deflector on it and have yet to find any marks on the lower as a result.

I think you folks are worrying about a problem that doesn't exist.

Addendum: I looked at the marks on SWS's lower, and if that's what everyone is so concerned about, you guys are more anal than I am. Much ado about nothing, especially on a polymer lower.

You might want to cut the tape where the upper meets the lower. Otherwise you may encounter slight difficulty when field stripping it.

You eventually acclimate to the concussion. There's concussion at outdoor ranges, too, though. At outdoor ranges, you find larger calibers than at indoor ranges, for the most part. Just wait until you are next to someone shooting .50 BMG.

Cool! My son did a tour on the Kersearge out of Norfolk. He's an intel weenie on his third billet with NSA - currently an instructor at the shop at Ft. Gordon.

To me, the skateboard tape looks far worse than any minuscule marks that might appear on the lower.

Some pics of my install. I noticed the previous pic with the tape, the mount is one slot to the right from where I mounted mine. I looked at the pic from sws website and determined mine showed a bigger gap then theirs. That's when I moved it over one left.. it closed the gap a little. (not that it matters to me much) and now it matches the install on the website. On mine, I don't see the "ledge" on the edge of the last rail. My mount overlaps slightly. (as seen in the second pic)

That's exactly what mine looks like.

Back to the skate tape ... show some photos after you've put a few hundred rounds through it. I bet the tape is covered by brass from the cases as they rub across it. A piece of electrical tape would be better, if you insist on solving a non-existant problem. Brass slides over a smooth surface; it leaves some of itself on sandpaper.
