Let me preface this by saying this is my first 22 rifle in 50+ years so I am not familiar with the internals.

I field stripped and cleaned my 22 tonite. I have done at least 3 other times without an issue. Well after re-installing the bolt assembly, it would not retract. I remived the trigger assembly and found the small part, about 1-3/4" long laying behind the bolt assembly preventing it from moving. Can't see where it came from or how to put back it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you're referring to the item in the first photo, that's your mainspring and strut....the rounded end of the strut goes into the slot at the rear of the hammer. The base of the spring sits in the recess at the rear of the frame, behind the hammer.

got it, thanks!!! Back together now and functions.

So why did this fall out this time and not the last 2-3 times I stripped and cleaned?

If the hammer is cocked it cannot fall out. If the hammer is forward like your second picture shows and you remove the trigger assembly, that hammer spring and strut can fall out.

Thanks! I remember releasing the hammer when I re-installed the trigger assembly. That is why it fell out!! DUMMY me!!! Will watch it next time.
