My daily backup and off duty carry gun is my pre-lock 342ti. The weight makes it a joy to carry.

With all that daily carry and the fact that it rides on my boot at work, the gun is showing quite a bit of wear. The finish is scratched in places and the titanium cylinder has some light surface scratches from where I had to kick it across a parking lot to keep a bad guy from recovering it after he had dislodged it from the holster (scary night)

Anyway, I've recently been ordered to let S&W do whatever they can to make her pretty again or I will no longer be allowed to carry the gun. The brass look at its ugliness and question its safety and functionality.

S&W Customer Service has assured me (twice) that they can refinish it. I've asked about the cylinder scratches and have simply been told to "send it in and let us take a look at it". Neither rep would hazzard a guess as to how much the repairs I asked about will cost.

Money, of course, is tight. Combine my cop's salary with my wife's layoff 4 months ago and the $50 or so it will cost to overnight the gun to S&W becomes a significant expense. I would like to have an idea as to what this endeavor might cost me before I consider coughing up the money.

Has anyone had similar work done by S&W on an Airlite revolver that could report on the average costs of repair/replacement (or whatever S&W does) to titanium cylinders and for repairs to the Airlights in general? I'm simply trying to determine if it will be worth my time to send it back or switch to my Glock 27 (which I hate. But that's another topic).

I'm most interested in the frame refinishing costs and any costs relating the the titanium cylinder. Can it be bead blasted or refinished or does S&W replace any and all damaged ti cylinders.

Thanks for any assistance

I have absolutely ZERO experience with Factory refinishing of the "Ti-Scan" guns. My suggestion would be to look for a REPUTABLE local 'smith who could apply one of the "Spray 'n Bake" finishes to the frame AND cylinder. It will make the gun LOOK "Like New" again, and shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. HTH. Paulie686.

I've had a silver/clearcote and a black ti/scan frame refinished by S&W under warranty. Both looked like new. I had a silver/clearcote refinished in black, me paying. Beautiful job. Cost for an N-frame, frame only, is $125. Don't have a clue what they do about Ti cylinders. You never really know about S&W. Sometimes they'll do a bunch of work for free, sometimes they charge. If you talk to the right guy on the right day they'll pay shipping. If they don't, the return shipping charge is $20.

Hi:
I had an similar experience using a ankle holster only in my incident the bad guy gained possession of my backup. This ended my using a ankle holster. I started using an IWB holster in my boot top with the clip over the boot top.
This works well if the boot was laced up snug.
However I ended up using a holster that attached to my vest. I felt that my back up was more accessable to me and less accessable to a bad guy.
Stay Safe,
Jimmy
