This is true but it varies over time and will not be true on an outdated map.
It's a slow change and a movement of only 1 or 2 degrees shouldn't have a lot of effect on normal navigation.

I have a couple. And my declination is 0.
If you do not know just go to this site and enter your coordinates or zip code.

I've got a couple but on the rare occasions when I wanted a compass I never had one with me. Now I always carry a compass.
Jim.. what are you doing with all the compass!!?
Don't you know a compass is obsolete.. they've been replaced with GPS!![]()
Declination? I don't need no stinking declination.I have a couple of Silvas like yours, but my black folding one doesn't have the hole in the lid.
I hope everyone knows to set the declination adjusment for your zone.
The southern hemisphere requires different settings. Better to buy a compass in South Africa, Australia, etc.

Honest, I have a gps also. All I can ever get it to do is tell me where I am! I know where I am, I need to know where I'm going!![]()
I have a Silva orienteering compass that I paid a buck for at a flea market 10 years ago works like a charm.
Now here's a question for you how many of you know the magnetic declination for your area?
But.. the #1 rule in navigation is you must know you're present location to know where everything is in relation to you're present location!
I never use a GPS to show me the way to a point. I only use it to help determine my present location.
