The price point on the S&W MP10 is amazing for the current times. Love the look of the gun, it'll handle the same as my MP15. Just love the looks of the platform.

I want one. I just don't know if I need one.

Cons:
Heavy
Harder to recover fired brass
Soon as you pull the trigger next round chambers. Have to unload to exit tree stand.
Don't have alot of 308 ammo.
If you have to shoot Southpaw brass flying at you

Pros
Familar manuel of arms.
Rapid follow up shots.
Good Range.
Proven Caliber


Ammo is going to cost more, I'll be heavier than a bolt gun.

Come on folks why do I need one? Other than a picking off zombies several hundred yards out. Why do I need a MP10?

What's everybody using theirs for?

So far just using mine for zombies... not much time for anything else since i got it.

so far i have found it harder to find accessories, magazines, ammo.... but that is probably true for any gun right now.

Gonna be using mine for mostly ground hog and coyote around my parts. I could use something else but the AR platform is awesome, esp. M&P models, and the .308 round is THE round! Screw that lil .223 pea shooter
Little info on ballistics out at 400 yrds, .223 hits in the neighborhood of 350 ft-lbs of force, same distance in .308 equals almost 1600 ft-lbs of force... Winner winner chicken dinner!!!

There is nothing a .223 can do....that a .308 can not do better. I am waiting to see the groups it can shoot. It TSHTF it would be my prefered rifle. Yea, its heavier and ammo costs more....but when a .223 just does not quite do it...all of that goes away.

Any thoughts out there on glass for the M&P10? Have the camo Hunter model- going to use primarily for deer & pigs. Have the Nikon P-223 on my AR15 and like, particularly the BDC feature. Would like a similar scope in camo. Help me here!?

I bought mine for deer hunting and all around fun shooting! A lot of deer are able to run after the first hit, and a fast follow up shot really helps put em down quick. If I lose a few pieces of brass but I get my big buck I call that a good deal ! 1 to 2 moa off the bipod, no complaints

I know I went down much of the same list you did before buying mine- pros and cons, cost, etc., then of course the "do I really NEED one." Here was my biggest reason- I hunt whitetail, in the woods. I have a model 1894 30-30, .444 marlin, and a 300wsm and have taken deer with each. Only two of those deer were resting shots, the rest standing or a quick kneel. Every time I shoulder a rifle in a hurry I go into a high shoulder pocket, because despite the hunting and recreational shooting with these guns, I have thousands of rounds in training on the AR platform. Last year I shouldered my .300 like an AR and shot uphill at my buck, ending up with a scope ring on my forehead. So, why not hunt with what I have trained my body to do? I have not had a second of regret- this is a great gun, and very light for a .308 platform. If you have time on an AR, I think you cannot go wrong with this to hunt with.

I am running a fixed 6x Weaver optic on my hunting 308AR. (BM, not M&P) It's good to 200yds. I prefer the 308 for hogs, because I hunt brush a lot, and do a lot of depredation. As such, I tend to do a lot of closer in shooting, and multiple target shooting. I like the fixed 6 because there is no messing with the scope; put it on the area, it glasses a wide view, and it's easy to get on target, and easy to get back on target after a shot.
Camo is only a couple cans of spray paint away......

OP; I am a lefty. I have never had issues with semis' throwing brass in my face. The only gun that has ever bothered me in that way was duck hunting with a Remington 1100. We shot a bunch, over 2 days. After literally 50 or 60 shots in a morning, I was chewing powder and my eyes were bugging me, even with shooting glasses on. No such issue from rifles.

As to weight of the rifle; yes it's a bit heavier. It's a great choice for a blind, it will steer a bit quicker than a bolt rifle, and the way you hold it promotes easier tracking of a quick moving animal. Second shots are much simpler and quicker.

Whether or not to deal with the M&P vs any other 308AR....... that's the question. I feel they are good, and the issues are pretty limited overall. For every rifle you will read about with a complaint here...... there are 15 that work just fine right from the get go. And S&W has been very good with service and warranty work on the rifles. Can not claim they are not taking care of their customers. All I have seen is they are fixing issues if they creep up, so that is a BIG plus.

Sometimes we want something that suits our needs well and sometimes we want something only because it scratches an itch. Be honest with yourself and get the M&P-10 because you want it. If you have to justify "needing" it you don't really want it. In that case pass. You're welcome- always glad to help a fellow shooter gain some clarity

I am satisfied with the M&P-10. I stopped worryng about recoverng brass while hunting. Even with my bolt action rifles I rarely recovered my brass after the shot.

Unloading an AR in a tree stand will be more awkward. Removing the mag won't be a problem but clearing the chamber without dropping the round won't be as easy as a bolt action. Only you can decide if it's too much trouble or not.

308 ammo isn't difficult to get and if the price of the rifle leaves you without enough funds to shoot don't buy it. Can't help you with the southpaw thing. I'm right handed.

Bottom line- You don't need an M&P-10. If you want one and it suits your purposes get one. If not- don't. So far mine has been a good rifle and suits my purposes just fine

I'm left handed. Not an issue to shoot the M&P 10 or any functional AR with a modern brass deflector.
Actually, the M&P 10 is pretty lefty friendly with the ambi releases and safety.
It's better than shooting a Glock with weak ejection left handed...
One thing about shooting AR's left handed: You get to taste the powder a little more....
