Wow ..Just scored some Hornady 40 S&W 155 TAP ammo. I usually use thier XTP's but all I could get was the Tap. Any one on this honored site ever use it???? It will be fed to my Sigma SVE... Thanx in advance for yor imput. Stash
I don't care for the XTP bullet for self defense. It tends to be an overpenetrator (it does what it was designed to do, penetrate very deeply) in my tests in .44 magnum XTP, and in 10% gelatin tests of other caliber XTP loads I've found online. www.stoppingpower.net might have a test on that load if you do a search in the test bed forum. Also check the "old site" (or something like that) link on www.brassfetcher.com . It will most certainly be a reasonably effective stopper, .40 S&W is a hard caliber to screw up, but it's a niche load designed to go deep. If that's not what you want, look elsewhere. I will say that I would much rather carry that load than an underpenetrator (less than 10" or so).
I know the XTPs do too good a job. Thats why we use them as carry ammo. Bang and down.... Have to soak up some newspapers when the TAP ammo gets here and compare the two.. Thanx for your imput..
Just compared the TAP to the XTP... Looks like the same bullet to me. Also the cases were nickle not black nickle as in thier catalog. Wonder when they changed??? I'll take em out over the weekend and see whats different about the loads.
I've used the XTP's in 10MM (180Gr) to good effect. Excellent bullet, but it's tough. It needs velocity to expand, that's why it works well in the mighty 10. I do believe TAP ammo uses XTP bullets so it should be the same ballistically, terminally, etc.
In other words: If you're used to the XTP, TAP should be the same thing.
For defense against thin skinned, two legged predators I prefer the Golden Sabers or Gold Dots. Those bullets don't need as much velocity to expand (but that's not what you asked is it? )
No rain so I decided not to chance to weekend. Took 2 clips of each (40 rnds total) and chewed up some paper and cardboard. About a foot of wet paper with cardboard fore and aft. All 40 went thru it like it was butter. In my opinion they both will do the job, and do it well. The Tap didn't seem as nasty as the EXT. Damn near fist size exit hole with the XTP and a bit smaller for the Tap. Don't believe it would matter one bit for SD use. Got to get my confuser guy over to teach how to do pics. Althoughthere wasn't much left to take pics of anyway. Going to try and get a few more boxes .... All in all I'm a happy camper. Shoot straight and often. Stash
I did a search on Marshall's forum; .40 S&W 155 gr. TAP-FPD (what does "FPD" stand for anyway?), when fired into 10% gelatin through four layers of denim from a H&K USP compact penetrated 19.625" and expanded to .501".
I also found a .40 cal. 155 gr. XTP 10% test on Marshall's site that lists 16.5" penetration.
