When I was having the barrel threaded on my 15-22 (I bought an early model when they weren't offered with a threaded barrel) it got an 11 degree crown. Made no difference with accuracy. But with the ammo most of us use I doubt you could tell anyway. It don't hurt anything, but it's kinda like putting 11 degree lipstick on a pig IMO.
I agree with everything Phil said and if I may add my 2 cents worth...
Unfortunately the only way you will know if a new crown will work is to try it.
The type of crown has little to do with accuracy; a crown only needs to be without flaws and barrel cut-off square to bore.
You can check for flaws at crown with a good magnifying glass or loop and visually inspect crown under good light. If visual inspection doesn’t reveal any flaws a cotton swab diligently rubbed in and around crown may reveal flaws by grabbing cotton fibers and pulling them lose from cotton tip. You may still need the magnifying glass to see this. If this happens your crown has issues. However it may or may not be affecting the accuracy of the ammo you use. Me being the anal type I would recrown in this instance.
You can also have a perfect crown and if barrel cut-off is not square to the bore will also be an accuracy issue. This can be more difficult to determine unless you have the tools of a good gun smith.
Not knowing you or your expertise I don’t know how to advise you to proceed from here. I have corrected a many a minor flawed crown with nothing more than a properly sized marble (or brass round headed screw) and some valve grinding compound. If this sounds weird to you then I would let a good gunsmith look at it.
What your being told is correct a target crown on 15-22 is like putting a 50X scope on it. The 15-22 was not designed as a target rifle its a fun trainer. With that said I put 11* target crowns on evrry threading job I do on these guns but its not to get the shoot a tactical advantage. Its because when you turn the barrel down to .5 to tread it your left with a very thin lip from the way the factory crowns them. By adding the 11* crown i cut away the lip and recess the bore back slightly to help protect it.
What I've been wondering is would a Bentz style chamber help the 1522 in the accuracy department? I realize one couldn't be cut in the factory barrel as the chamber is already too long for that style chamber but a new barrel with a Bentz chamber might improve the accuracy a little. Anyone have an opinion about that?
Just to illustrate what Brett (BELT_FED) is talking about here is a shot of mine with the lip intact.
You could in theory nick this and cause issues threading the flash hider or suppressor back on. My flash hider doesn't come off so I wasn't too worried about having it machined off and re-crowned but Brett does this as part of his process, which is a good thing!
