I just ran into a buddy at a local gun show. And he was telling me about a Taurus PT 1911 Duo Tone in 45acp he has for sale. That sounds worth the money? He said he bought it to carry and never carried it and opted for a compact Kimber.

He said he put about 30 rounds through it, and it ran fine.

Other than being the ugly (my opinion) Dual Tone Finish on the slide. This is the one with the brushed finish on the sides of the black slide. Are they decent guns? Any known issues?

Does any one here own one or has fired one?

And if I couldn't stand the color of the slide, I thought maybe about having the slide Cerakoted?

Thanks In Advance for any Help or Info.

i work at a local gun shop and know several people who have Taurus PT-1911's. nobody has any complaints at all. Taurus is known for, shall we say, questionable quality. their 1911's however seem to be decent guns, if you can get over the stigma of Taurus ownership that is... before the bashing begins, remember that there's a price point for everyone.

He hit me at $400 and sounded like he "might" take a little less, since he just bought the $1200 Kimber? He says it's as new with box and papers and such. He said he paid almost $600 for it back in the spring of last year.

I've owned Taurus's before and NEVER had any issues except, with their customer service. Over parts orders. Taurus's are decent guns and a good value for the money? But I've never owned or knew any one that has owned their 1911's before. Other than this one?

Like they say, I guess you get what you pay for. And $400 for a decent LNIB 1911 doesn't sound bad??

I have had a PT 1911 for three years. I thoroughly enjoy it. This model is near the top of the Taurus food chain. If you want to impress your friends with a fancy name buy a Rolex.

I recall when Taurus first came out with the PT1911 everybody held their breath expecting that they would not feed, eject or shoot straight. The quiet since has been deafening. Even American Rifleman were impressed, especially as their test gun shot 2" groups at 25 yards.

Well, I pulled the trigger!

It's as new as he stated! Absolutely no signs of wear or carry. You can see on one mag, that the follower, shows signs of being loaded and the gun is cleaned and oiled properly. He even gave me his original bill of sale from Davidsons with their lifetime warranty? And with the Taurus lifetime warranty! It should be well covered! He did give $586 for it last May. And he took $375 for it. I don't see how I could go wrong???

The fit and finish looks good. Not thrilled with the trigger pull, but after a few thousand rounds through it, if I still don't like it, it's a easy fix.

Not thrilled at all with the plastic grips. Again, easy fix and I just need to look in my grip pile and see what I have. Maybe some wrap around Hogue? Maybe flat panel hogue? Maybe black VZ? But if nothing in the pile is too my liking, quality 1911 grips are very cheap!!

I like the checkered front and trigger guard and back strap, the oversized slide release, the oversized checkered mag release, the ambi safety, beveled mag well ETC. the things I used to spend a fortune on, to put on my colts. And that came Factory on my Colt XSE's that I paid 3 times more for!

And maybe the two tone brushed slide will grow on me? It don't look as bad in person, as in the pictures? But again, we have a Nationally Known Cerakote company here in town. Easy Fix!

So all in all, I don't think I went wrong for $375. I've got S&W grips that are worth more than that? And I can't shoot just grips?? I have to keep it in prospective!! LOL!

In a few weeks, I'll post a range report! I'll keep y'all posted!

Thanks for the tips and info!!!

Had DT for a couple of years, shot it alot with no issues what so ever. If you got it for under $400, you a hell of a deal.

Well, I did a complete clean up job on it. I always soak it for a day in MotorKote! And make sure the rails are clean and soaked. Then oil it as normal. I Polished the out side of the barrel, where you see it through the slide. It looks great now. Adjusted the trigger and it feels Fantastic!

Did a LIVE chat with Taurus on line and it was made in May 2015.

I just ordered some VZ Operator II grips for it in black and gray.

Can't wait to put some rounds through it. I'm stocked on 45acp, so I'm good to go.

Thanks for all the replies!! I'll keep ya posted on how it performs!

Replace the dorky hammer, with a quality unit from Wilsons, maybe a sear and a trigger when you are at it?

I recently got a PT1911 stainless in a trade. Previous owner had played with it trying to lighten the trigger pull. Took it to my smith. Changed out the grip safety for a normal one and changed the hammer to a wide spur, installed a new sear. Functions extremely well, haven't shot it for accuracy yet. Feeds 200 grain SWC loads like a champ. These are based on the series 80 design, not the series 70. Parts all interchange with normal 1911 series 80 parts.

The only thing I find I don't like about it is the sights, has the Heinie "straight 8" sights on it. The bases of these sights are cut with a different angle than Novaks so changing out sights is problematic. If I decide that I really like this pistol I may have it milled for a low-mount adjustable rear. Anyone have any other ideas on how to deal with the sights on these things?
