Before and after.

3 1/4” group with .44-40 @ 50 feet

1 1/2” group with .44 Special @ 50 feet

Factory Winchester .44-40 bullets are .426 in diameter and S&W used standard .44 Magnum barrels with .429 bores on these Model 544 revolvers. So they don’t shoot very accurately with factory ammo. Hand loading .430 bullets corrects the problem.

My trick is that I already load .44 Special and really just didn’t want to buy dies and get cases to reload .44-40 ammo.

So I had a custom gunsmith fit a .44 Magnum cylinder to my 544 and now I have a nicely accurate .44 Special with an amazing excellently balanced 5-inch barrel.

This is a cheap way of getting a 5-inch barrel .44 Special N-Frame since 544s are cheaper today than they were when new (considering inflation).
