After wanting to get a shield 9 for a couple years now, shooting it serveral times with a friend, and heavily shopping it, I began to comparison shop when I realized how good my tax return was this year.

I was very very close to getting the shield until I went to the range twice with a work friend who had the Taurus 111G2. I fell in love with it. And after reading up on it, it seemed hat all the reviews and feedback were the same in that it was a great gun.

So today I traded in my smith and wesson SD9VE that i rarely use and walked out the door with the taurus having paid a net of $150.

Reasons I got the taurus over the shield.

-Price
-Fits better in hand, notice the grip extension on magazine? Its bigger than the one on the shield and BOTH mags have it, not just one. My entire hand grips the gun rather than the shield i had to tuck my pinky.
-Double strike capability. Shield does not offer this to my knowledge.
-Capacity
-Reviews (same reliability as any good OEM)
-Double recoil spring. The recoil on the taurus beats the shield hands down. Upon shooting both today I was able to find my target much faster with the taurus after every shot. That goes for comfort as well.
-The stippling on the grip is much nicer out of the box than the shield.

I picked one up, in stainless, a couple months ago and I love it. My new private FFL was running a special on them (he can't seem to keep them in stock) and I figured what the heh. I've run about 200 rounds in it so far and nary a burp or hiccup. I think it's a great shooter---eats holes out of the center of the target at 10 yards all day long. That trigger does take some getting used to, though.

When I want a compact,l double stack ,thumb safety, Taurus PT111G2 it is. Best value I know of. Nothing I do not like about the pistol. This is from someone who swore would never have a Taurus.

It's kind of apples and oranges to compare a single stack to a double stack, but the PT111G2 has a few good things going for it.
1. Second strike capability
2. Takes SIG P-series magazines
3. $199 price tag

It is not as well made as the Shield, it has adjustable polymer sights, the trigger is only managable, and of course the internal lock.

It is in the same category as the SD9VE price wise but is closest to the M&P9C size and capacity wise. I'm glad that you are happy with the Taurus. At the end of the day, I'll take my SD9VE compact over the PT111G2.

I'm not sure about the not as well made as the shield argument just yet. Upon taking it apart and cleaning it, it seems very well built.

Hell my SD9VE had rattles. The Taurus is nice and tight, no rattles.

You should have been able to, on your own, sell the SD9 for the cost of a new Taurus or more. Apparently the shop gave you a roughly $100 trade in.

I haven't gotten on the Shield bandwagon either mind you. But you would have been further ahead keeping the SD9 as a reserve just in case gun.

Actually not the case. Because of the current demand, one shop was out of them, the other had them for 299.99, not 199.99. They gave me 175 for my SD9VE, so after tax and a box of ammo i walked out th door for 150.

I realise some of you dont understand why i made the swap, but gun ownership is about choice and what works best for you. I liked my SD9VE a lot, but it was my beginner gun. And honestly the thing never felt that great in hand.

It made financial and practical sense for me as an idividual to move into the taurus for the reason I named in my original post. I honestly lost nothing in the swap except 150 bucks and I gained a gun that I can carry and feels 10 times better in hand.

My bodyguard is my secondary option right now and I am hoping to get my first revolver this summer.

Good choice on the 111 g2.. I bought one last year and could not be happier with it. It too is one of my new carry piece.
Make sure you break it in first before you carry it though, it is picky feeding certain hollow point ammo until broke in properly. Only took 100 rounds roughly until they started feeding reliably, kept hanging up on the bottom of the feed ramp.. Now it feeds any thing all day long!! Good luck and congrats!!

When the PT 111 came out I got one and thought I'd love it.
5 trips to the range at over 150 rounds each time.
Taking my time and wanting to love the gun. I just couldn't do it. The trigger had a mile of take up and was sloppy (to put it nicely).
Of course l'll get slack for this - I felt the same about the shield too.

If it's the only gun you can afford or if you really just like it. I say good for you and keep shooting.

Many years ago, I was the HR (Human Resources) guy for the RQ&A (Reliability Quality & Assurance) department of a large manufacturing plant. I'll never forget what the RQ&A engineers told me when I asked them to explain their function to me in simple language. I was told that "quality" meant how good their products were, and "reliability" meant quality over time. Do what you want, but I always think about that before I buy things - especially with regards to firearms.

Regards,

Dave
