I just bought my sd40ve as a Christmas gift a few months ago. I love it and have no problems with it. Just came across a trade offer and was wondering if anyone has/had a taurus pt145. Its a compact 45. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. This is my first and only gun I've ever had. (Nervous to get rid of it) I only like the Taurus for the fact that its compact and its a 45! Thoughts???

The PT145 has a huge fan base in the Taurus community. I do not own one, but do own another Taurus that is fantastic. I like the SD9VE so I bought one.

Here's a link to the people who own the 145's.

Millennium (Pro) Pistols

Hopefully you can keep the Smith and get the Taurus too.

Good luck.

I have a different model of Taurus semi-auto that has been back to Taurus for repair 3 times (for 2 different things).
Just want to point out that I have to pay for shipping back to Taurus repair whereas S&W pays the shipping for their warranty repairs. At $70 a trip, that is significant.

You should inquire as to why the Taurus is up for trade. I've seen enough cases over the years of people trading into something that didn't work. Also consider that 45 ammo is more expensive than 40 right now, and 40 seems to be a little easier to find.

My friend owned one. He said it was absolute trash. Very picky on the ammo it would fire reliably. He had to send in for repairs multiple time. He also said he was not a fan of the customer service they have.

If you love the pistol you have....keep it! So many trade for another and most come to regret it. Chances are what you trade for will be worse than what you got!

My Daddy told me not to get rid of a gun unless I absoulutely hated it. I have follwed that advice and now have guns most people claim are classic's and command a high price.

Thanks all!! I wanted to trade with the warm weather HOPEFULLY coming soon for something compact to carry. Since I love my sd, I'm thinking ill just save for a future purchase!!! M&p 45c perhaps!

I have never owned any Taurus auto's but have a 455 snub 45 and it is a great gun. I would never let it go. Revolvers yes, auto's ?

Look, I say keep the SD. The PT145 is discontinued. Hopefully they will bring the compact 45 back in a G2 version, which gets rave reviews in both 9 and 40.

Keep the Smith, no need to bash Taurus. The PT92 is as good as anything out there in the 4-$600 range.

I thought Taurus always paid for shipping both ways in addition to their lifetime warranties?

I have an SS 990 22lr revolver for plinking whose cylinder would always cease up at the first spent casing. I called Taurus and they emailed a prepaid Fed Ex label and fixed the issue free of charge no questions asked. Zero cost to me and had the gun back in less than 2 weeks.

When (month/year) did they pay your shipping both ways, and how long after purchase did they do this?
If they have changed their policy, I have a PT22 I would like to send them, but don't think enough of it to pay any shipping.

As of Aug 2012, they flatly refused to pay my return shipping "We will repair it under warranty, but it is your responsibility to get it here." I have the receipt.

I purchased it this past November and called them about the issue probably within 4-5 weeks. I know it was shipped to them at the height of the Xmas mailing season.

They didn't ask any questions that I recall (when or where it was purchased even though I readily had all of that information available) except to include a letter detailing the issue with their return authorization number. I admittedly mailed in the warranty-card a week or two prior to that, so that could have something to do with it.

If you reach them, keep us updated on what they say if you don't mind.

I really want to believe they've changed their customer service philosophy to picking up the shipping tab, too. Particularly when it was their manufacturing flaw to begin with.

The Taurus website makes it clear that they do not pay for in-bound shipping. I have heard of Taurus paying for in-bound shipping during the first 90 days after a gun is purchased new, and in some cases when there has been a repeat problem, but their official policy is that they don't pay. I have been told by Academy Sports staff that they will send a Taurus back to the factory if it was purchased there, for the 1st two years after purchase. (The downside is, you have to take it to the store where it was purchased...and if you've moved, that may not be convenient.) Their turn-around time has been very slow, and repeat trips to "fix" the same problem are not uncommon.

I've owned Taurus revolvers and semi-autos, albeit this has been several years ago. The QC was low, and the reliability and functionality was inconsistent. Taurus guns don't keep resale/trade value to the same extent that other guns do.

Taurus has committed to make improvements in customer service, and recent reports indicate that they are improving...they aren't in the same league as S&W and Ruger, but they are trying to do a better job. There is one gun that they have currently out on the market that I find interesting: the PT111 Millennium Pro G2. It gets great reviews with few reported problems.

I don't think I'd be interested in a Taurus product, unless they paid for my shipping costs and had a much more effective CS program.

Looking at their website, you are correct;

2. All firearms must be shipped to us prepaid...

I can assume Taurus paid for my shipping due to the fact it was indeed a new and recent purchase.

Not to stray too far off the OP's topic, but me and my boys (9 and 11) really do enjoying shooting that Taurus 990 22lr.

-My Wife bought her Taurus 85 back in '93 brand new. That little revolver is still a great gun to shoot. And except for the burn marks in the cylinder, it still looks just about new. I always wanted to pick up a 669VR when they came out, but never got the chance...

I have an M85 too, and that little guy is a stud! ;)

Back to topic, I'm not in favor of selling a gun to fund another unless you aren't satisfied with the first one. Hopefully the OP can keep the SD and find another way to snag a 45 compact.

I have a Taurus PT940 that, on occasion, I have determined I would sell because it is the only .40S&W gun I own & I never shoot it. However, on each of those occasions, I decided to shoot up the ammo I have for it. Once I shoot it, I clean it & put it away & decide not to sell. It is accurate, runs like a clock, & is just fun to shoot.

I also have their 5" 1911 in 9MM. I haven't shot it too much yet, but it seems to run fine so far.

I had a M85 revolver at one point; it did have to go back to Taurus for repairs (the barrel was turned in too far canting the front sight, & the mainspring needed replaced causing light primer strikes) but once I got it back it was good. This was probably back in the early-to-mid 1990s. Sold it to a good friend who as far as I know still has it today.

I would have a PT92, but when I finally decided to buy I found out they only produce them with the front rails now. I'm not a fan; I ended up buying a Beretta M9 instead.

I'd buy another Taurus; I think they have improved both the quality of their guns & from what I hear the Customer Service, which was the biggest rap against them, has improved dramatically.

The .45 ACP Taurus PT-145 is one my favorite off duty and concealed carry pieces.

10+1 rounds of .45 ACP in a 1.2" wide compact that weighs in a 21 oz.s is a joy to tote.

My particular gun surpassed the 2,000 round mark a long time ago with zero "burps"; it's been 100% reliable.
