It's that time again. Tax time.
For a number of years now I have used TurboTax. For a number of reasons already discussed in previous threads, it may be time to jump ship.
I am in the market for a another brand of tax preparation software.
After reading a Number of articles online, I am interested in TaxACT.
Have you you guys used TaxACT? Any other recommendations?

I have used Taxact since you could do online tax returns and I like it. The first year I used it to do my taxes it was absolutely free. Then it went to 10 bucks, and now it is 13.99 for the Ultimate bundle if you itemize which I figure every one does. So, the state and federal can both be e filed and you get your returns quickly now. Last years returns came within a few days of IRS acceptance. It is a stream lined process entirely online and the step by step instructions makes it pretty easy to not miss anything. All the forms are there and you can even read the support topics. A lot easier than having to call someone and/ or mail anything in.

I like it because I can see everything at once and go back and forth at will. IMO it is the best tax return software out. Good luck with whatever you end up using this year.

I go with what I know, and that is TurboTax. Tried H&R Block about six years ago, and ended up back with TT.

My Return is still too complicated to file electronically, I use encoded Excel spreadsheets. The data bases for electronic filers are routinely hacked without the IRS knowing it - maybe before it gets to the IRS. Hackers use the information to file for refunds, get the check and disappear leaving you to explain to the IRS that you are victim of identity theft. They will understand what you are explaining to them in 6 months to a year, then it will take further months to stop the annoying notices.

I have an accountant who is very reasonable and good.

What are the specific reasons why *you* want to switch? Which schedules do you require? You prior experience with TurboTax is a distinct advantage for you.

BTW, the 1040EZ/A version of TurboTax is cheaper than both the H&R Block and TaxAct products, because that version of TurboTax efiles state returns for free. Also, Block charges extra for Earned Income Credit (EIC).

You apparently didn't read the previous Turbotax thread.
TT has been going consumer unfriendly for several years now.
They have increased the price and lowered the quality of the product.
My return is moderately complex with several fairly unique schedules, mostly related to seller carry back mortgage notes.

I thought about TaxAct as well. I don't like the TurboTax model of making you re-purchase the entire program every year. The deal breaker for me last year when I last checked is the fact that TaxAct wouldn't open TurboTax files, making filling in all the information over again a PITA. In addition, switching programs, there's no way to automatically compare last year's figures with this year, avoiding mistakes and red flags. I'm sticking to TurboTax for the time being.

Taxact allows you to import and compare previous years returns at least if they were filed with them. The topics are easy to follow the information is laid out and kind of hard to make a mistake with it. Granted it has increased in price over previous years but I also think that you working with a program saved on your personal computer is a lot more hackable than having to sign into a secure server with encryption that changes on a VPN every hour to two. Again, I think people are brand loyal and if you have had luck with certain things in the past then why switch?

TaxACT is not fool proof there has been problems in certain things in the past but for the most part those have been worked out. I like the fact that the forms are there, it is easy to e file and I have yet to ever have any problems with any type of audit or rejection of my file. Even when the first years of having to mail in your state return before they were able to process 100 percent state returns. I have no problem in recommending TaxACT but I have had good luck with them. Some people try multiple programs to see which one gives the highest return and a lot of times that does not pay out. Pick one program and stick to it, that is the best way for you to get the best results.

I've used taxact a couple times in the past and all went well for me.

In the past I used TurboTax and at least one other software solution. I've tried, and failed, to use Quick Books to keep track of finances. I've spent hours myself with the forms and a calculator trying to get it right. No matter what I tried, or how simple my tax return was, it always lead to anxiety.

For the last 7 or 8 years I've paid a tax preparer. Hands down the best thing I've ever done concerning my taxes. Yeah, it's 10x more expensive than some software I could get myself, but it's 1,000x more calming. Also, when I have a tax question during the year, I can call him and get a simple answer. No software can do that for me.

Worth every penny. I'll be buying a gun with my refund. ;) (Yes, I know, I should adjust my exemptions. This is just how it works out. I'm happy with it so let it go.)

On behalf of all Americans, thank you for the free loan.
Since this will probably be the only thanks you'll ever get,
Many Thanks!

Filed TaxACT on the 2nd got both checks by close of business day on the 6th. Worked great as always, might want to double check TurboTax this year some of the state refunds have been hacked some how.

Heard that they have been worked out by now though.

Happy Filing.

You are kidding.....

I've been using HR Block. Am I overpaying?

You are kidding, right??? 'Hide and Run Block'? Big chains of specialists really bother me. I got rooked at AAMCO in spite of their commercials with Zsa Zsa, Precision Tune left a vacuum hose off my car and told me the electrical system had a problem. I took it to a mechanic and he put the hose back on. They've proved that Jiffy Lube was charging people for repairs they didn't make. The list is long and distinguished.

My Tax Account uses Drake Software, Been going to the same person for eight years, never a problem always a refund.

What ever happened to the "Flat Tax"?

FYI: The fraud on Turbotax has risen to the level that Massachusetts and Vermont have suspended Turbotax refunds. Other states are expected to follow. Turbotax itself may be suspending state filings.

My wife is an accountant, she's been using TurboTax for years to do our taxes.
