Once again it's Tax Time. I just finished my taxes and am done with it for another year. Easy Peasy!
It wasn't always so. Way back then, I had always paid to have my taxes done.

In 1967 I was stationed at Ft. Lewis WA. Out came a set of orders with my name on them. I was detailed to attend Tax School, and was named Tax Assistance Officer.
How dare they do this to me!! Motor pool Officer---Mess Officer---Latrine Officer. Anything but Tax Assistance Officer!

Needless to say I attended Tax School and helped the troops fill out their taxes.
Since that day I have NEVER had to pay someone to do my taxes.
:)

I've been using Turbo Tax for over 20 years and found out today I have to buy a new computer (current one is only 5 years old) with windows 11 to run this year's software. I use Turbo Tax due to my investments and retirement accounts requiring tons of worksheets just to fill in one little line on the 1040. Crazy!

I have a almost 14 years old laptop running Win11. The rest of my computers also do, even though most were 'ineligible' to run it. There are tutorials online showing how to bypass the Windows 11 'requirements'.

Paul, I just finished my taxes a couple days ago. They are pretty simple and I do not make enough to bother having withholding put back on either my pension or SS. I ended up owing about $250 after using the standard deduction. Sure is nice to get it out of the way. Just got the 1099 for Mom's Estate after I cashed in her IRA and split it between us. The Estate Return is the only thing left to finish with her estate.

Still waiting on Charlie Schwab to drop it on me.
Back in the day, we would talk about getting the poop from group.
Now I’m waiting on Charlie to give me the poop.
Haven’t even downloaded TurboTax yet.
Charlie’s claiming 1099 availability by 12 February.

Turbo tax blew up their turbo doing my taxes that I wind up having to pay them irs scums over 5k so i do t do them because of it.

Still waiting on the docs from our advisory firm. Should be available by 2/15. Not in any hurry to complete them since I always write a check. I will be doing my moms and sisters as well. It is easy to do just a pain in the tuckus.

I think the IRS makes it a lot more difficult than it needs to be and withholding is the slickest move they ever made to fool the population into not really understanding how much they pay in taxes. My wife used to ask me about how much I made when we first got married and I would tell her the gross amount. She would say well that's not what hit the bank to which I EXACTLY!

Edit to add: On another note, the estimated taxes is another BS approach. Ok so we want you to guess how much you will owe and then we will either penalize you if you were wrong or decide to give you some back at their convenience of course.

I am sure you can all detect the saltiness; taxes are my white whale.......

I use H&R Block tax software for Windows. It makes my taxes easy to do and a breeze to E-file Federal Tax. My taxes are pretty simple; my military and civil service retirement 1099R forms are easy to get and Social Security information is added to income. I don't itemize deductions any more, because I come out better with the standard. I'm not in a rush to file, as I won't be getting a big return.

Edit: I filed last Friday, 13 March and received my refund in three work days today, 18 March.

2025 is my last tax year with a W-2; everything else is on 1099s. I'm looking forward to easy tax filing until I have to start taking SEP and IRA distributions in 3 years.
At 73, I had to withdraw from my SEP for the first time this year. I found out that an option was to send the minimum required withdrawal straight to the IRS. Since it was almost the same amount that my accountant recommended for my quarterly estimated tax payment, I just did that for my final payment.

Still waiting for 1 form that does not come out until 2/15, but my cursory TT entries would indicate a several thousand dollar refund.

Last year I owed, so I updated withholding on my pension to try to come out even. Gotta love the BBB - I had not expected to not have taxes on my SS.

Looks like a new Ruger is in my future.

Any suggestions on what I should buy? (I have so many variations now)

The Ruger/Marlin 1894C 357 mag - a real gem!

I'm in that same bag 'o stuff.
Hopefully, I can find a bare bones computer that is hardware compliant with Windows 11 that will accept my hard drive.
I think I saw the Dell has one that may work.
Then I can install my HD in the new box and do the Windows upgrade.

Got mine mostly done. Still waiting on one 1099 and for TurboTax to get a form I need updated. They say "soon." I know to the cent what's on the coming 1099, and have determined that we'll get a small refund - less than $1000. Unless the updated form changes that - I don't expect that it will, though.

The only year I ever got audited I actually paid a reputable private accountant to do our taxes, and it cost us dearly - - - never again, Turbo before that, and ever since.....

TurboTax can be used online on the Intuit/TurboTax website without downloading or installing software.

I have used TurboTax in the past, but the last few years I've been using H&R Block software. Costs less than TurboTax and does all the same stuff, just as easily. Oh yeah, and no problems running it on Win 10.

Haven't gotten all of the forms, so I haven't done mine yet. I expect to get some back due to the BBB changes. Too bad. I prefer to have to pay a little. I don't like giving Uncle Sam an interest free loan for the year. I'd rather he had to give me one!

I go to a guy because I still have money overseas and I also get a pension from the UK. I’m hoping that my pre-payments this year have been enough. I got a slight ding last year. This year I turned 65 so the allowance is higher, but one of my investment accounts went nuts in the last quarter.

It got to the point that it was taking me a week to do a tax form because I was double and triple checking everything and going through an incredible amount of stress. Four years ago I decided it was time to get an accountant. He found enough stuff that I didn't know about to practically pay his fee.

SS, small pension and minimal interest income. Do mine by hand and no hope of besting the standard deduction. Don't claim an exemption till i file, so get bout 4k back every year from state/fed.

I have spreadsheets mimicking the tax forms I do first. Won’t be upgrading the Thinkpad as I’m just now moving from WinXP to Win10, the last version that can run 16b programs. If forced to move on from 10, it will be to Linux!

Turbo Tax since the 20th century. I have 5 1099's ready, the wife, not so much. She'll get a big refund as usual but the .gov will keep $5digits of the "prepaid." I guess kids in Minneapolis gotta eat; Beluga caviar :) Joe

Managed to close a land sale before the end of 25.
Generated some cash and unfortunately a loss.
Das Kapital Gain in the wrong direction!

I never pay a penny more than I owe, but having worked in a LOT of screwed up countries, I don't resent what it costs to live here.
I don't resent what it costs to live here, but I do resent it when the government wastes money stupidly, or politicians use taxpayer dollars to line their own pockets.
