I'm wanting a .45ACP or .45 Colt double action revolver for home defense. I have no desire for a newly made one, so Im looking at the 25s and pre lock 625's.

Please give me as much info as you can. I've heard the early to mid model 25's in .45 Colt had some sort of oversized chamber or throat problem? Did this carry over to to the pre lock 625's in .45 colt? We're there wide spread reliability or durability problems with the long colt and/or ACP models?

Basically I'm trying to figure out what is the best variation (-2,-3,-4, etc) For reliability and durability? I know I could go ruger or something but this seems to be the best blend of old craftsmanship and efficiency.

I use to have a 625 mountain gun (tappered barrel). It was chambered for .45 Colt, but for $80, I had the cylinder cut to accept .45acp. This allowed me to shoot both calibers. The work was done by Pinnacle Firearms.

I had an older 1980 25-5 and a 1986 25-5 (both 4"). I sold the older one, as it didn't shoot very accurately. It may have suffered from the oversize throat issue. I kept the newer one and it shoots great.

For .45acp, I have a 22-4. That too is very accurate, even with fixed sights.

In my revolver journey, I'm finding that if I shoot the gun accurately, I keep it. If I don't, I sell it. S&W's can be hit and miss regardless of model or year of manufacture.

If you click the little tags "model 25" & "model 625" at the bottom of this tread, you'll get a ton of info.
