Needing a new mattress. Anyone have any comments on the Tempur-Pedic ones. Those things feel awfully good but what about after you get it home?

I was going to say the same thing. It's closed-cell foam, so it can't breathe. Nontheless, it's really comfortable.

No probs w/ "heat" with mine but it has the extra cushion on top. (Yes, it IS a Tempur-Pedic.)

Very comfortable, IMHO. Use same material with pillows; don't have the heat issue with those, either.

Be safe.

We've had ours for a couple of months. It was almost too firm at first, but it keeps getting better. My wife really wanted it for her hips. The thing that interested me most was the optional incline adjustment. I like to sleep with my head slightly elevated and a thick pillow doesn't cut it.

I don't have problems with heat, or difficulty getting out of it. I really don't sink down in it very much. I only weigh 170. I suppose a heavier person might sink further.

Dang thing was really pricey (we didn't buy the cheapest one), but I like it and my wife loves it. We hadn't bought a bed in 27 years, so i figured we were due and it was something my wife really wanted. I've spent a LOT more on revolvers, so I figured it was her turn.

Had one for a bit over a year now. Both my wife and I have back and knee problems after youthful indiscretion in sports, and used to have a heck of a time getting down the stairs in the morning. The first night I slept on it was wonderful. It can be very warm. We haven't purchased the new cushion thats supposed to cool it but after the heatwave we just went through, its on the top of my list. They are pricey but mine had a 20 year warranty.

I've been in the furniture business for nearly three decades. Training is my specialty. There are only three things we can do for anyone we truly love that will dramatically improve that person's life . . . for unless you are scuba diving or swimming, our entire life is spent doing one of three things:

1. Standing on your feet,

2. Sittin' on yer butt, or

3. Sleeping/resting in our bed.

Of the three, the most important would be to get the very best sleep system that you can find. Beds die such a slow death that we don't even notice they are getting worse until they get REAL bad. Sadly, many folks, from the time they were tykes, have only slept on mediocre beds so they don't know the difference.

You can make your life heaven or hell by how your sleep system cushions and fits your body . . . and how well you sleep affects your alertness and how you feel. IMHO, and in my personal beliefs, nothing is more important!

THE TEMPUR-PEDIC LINE . . .
Great stuff, and most other companies offer great stuff too that isn't advertised as agre$$ively on a national scale! This ain't rocket science really. I've been in very large mattress factories that will build a dealer virtually every type feature you can imagine. That being said, Tempur-Pedic is a wonderful line, especially the really good models.

Yes, the original foam of the Tempur, which has been used by other firms too, IS very hot if you just sleep with sheets between you or a thin mattress pad. You can always put a good insulating pad on it, and that's what I'd do if I owned one.

Other firms, and Tempur too, are now using other types of gel-infused foams, either on top of the raw memory foam, or embedded into their memory foams to "reduce the heat objection." Then again, the gel foams only reduce the heat build up by about 5%.

Bottom line . . . invest in quality bedding no matter where you end up making a selection, and you'll never go back to mediocre bedding again!

ON A SIDE NOTE, TODAY: I have someone I work with who has been having really bad sciatic nerve problems for a couple of years. He'd missed a bunch of work on occasion and just got back from both the doctor and chiropractor lately, as well as missing several days from work in extreme pain last week.

I asked him today what he was sleeping on. Keep in mind, he's ALSO in the business and has been for over 15 years.

I told him my wife had also had that type of problem . . . TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO before we got good bedding, but that the problem (and all the doctor fees) quickly went away forever. His face almost turned white and his jaw dropped.

He exclaimed, "I just remembered that my wife asked if we could use the new bed (bought initially for his son and just a middle-of-the-line set) when they moved to a new place TWO YEARS ago." The older premium bed was now in the empty guest room. He added that he'd liked the old one better, but he'd "gotten used to the new one." Well . . . his BODY didn't and the new sciatic nerve problem slowly manifested itself!!!

It was like a light bulb came on, and he replied, "Thanks, I know what I need to do tonight when I get home . . ."

Folk, I hope this helps . . .

Ours was pretty comfortable, but after 9 years it is time to get something different. I sink into it too much now. It feels like I am sinking in a pool of water...with my head floating on a raft. Too much neck strain. To roll over, I need to do a body throw spin with elevation. :D Cow trail comes to mind.
I thought that it might last longer, but I guess it is time for a change. I will be going foam-free, this time.

If you go with the Tempur-Pedic, do get a nice "topper" it is absolutely essential!

By coicidence I just heard an ad on TV that says the Tempur mattresses are actually ooler than the gel infused ones.

We wavered over the tempurpedic and the sleep number beds and finally went with the sleep number since it got rave reviews from others we know who got them. We love it and its adjustability. Have had it for 9 years now and no regrets at all. Before you lock in on a tempurpedic you might want to give the sleep number a try.

We had a big brand name mattress with the foam top. Do not know if it is the same as what Temper makes.

At first it was really comfortable but it definitely got hot and it semi molds to your shape after a while and you get "stuck" We did not like it at all.

Got a new regular firm set and much better (for us) as Tom stated you need to check them out and test drive some.:)

For medical reasons we had to get rid of our (heated) waterbed. Spoke to a friend who runs a mattress store and he recommended a latex bed. We ended up with the Sealy Spring Free latex and have had it for years. Best nights sleep since the waterbed. He also recommended we go to the store and lay down on the mattress for 20 minutes (I took a short nap, it was a quiet day) to see if it was comfortable.

We have had ours for 10 years and we both like it, it does not seem hot to me, I guess its like Goldilocks and baby bears bed "its just right", would not go back to an innerspring mattress. Jeff

Eight years and still going strong. Its without a doubt the most comfortable mattress I've ever had the privilidge of sleeping on. Most lower back strains go away after a night on our Tempur Pedic.
