Ten year wait. Finally got M19 snubbie

Congrats Checkman. Very few could disagree about paying "what it takes" to get a grail gun. I am suspect of those that say they NEVER have done that.

The first centerfire revolver I bought was a 6" Model 19 in Los Angeles, circa 1968. The first time I fired it I forgot "ears"! I believe I can still hear that shot ringing in my right ear.

While long gone that 19 was eventually replaced with this (April '80) 66-1:

It will go to one of the grandsons. Eventually.

Shoot and enjoy. Wear hearing protection.

"We don't pay too much, we just buy early."

It took me 35 years from when I saw my first 19 and fell in love until I finally got one.
As a new cop, I bought a NIB Model 58 for a duty gun for $81.00 because it was cheaper than a Combat Magnum at $125.00.
I carried it for a duty gun for 13 years.
Finally got to where I could afford a Model 19, and now I have three.

This one gets carried quite a bit in the winter time.

This thread is crazy. Made me think back to my first handgun I bought in 1979. A brand new blued 4" M19. I will never forget that smell when I opened the box. You guys know it too. Today my K's dominant my safe. They just feel "right". a 2 1/2" 66, 2 1/2" blued 19-4, 2-4" blued 19-4, 4" 66-1. Oh, I can't leave out the 4" 13-1, and the 4" 18-2. Great thread guys.

I got my 19-3 about a year ago in a trade deal. I've never regretted it for a second. Congrats on the gun, I enjoy reading about guys finding a long sought after piece.

Thanks, you just cost me $150. Because now I have to find a set of stags and polished "T" for my Model 19!

It was 1980 for me and I was literally buying my first revolver. Prior to that I had a couple of .25 ACP European pistols and some rifles. So, unbeknownst to me, I buy a gun that people recognize on sight and that even my non-shooting, late, lamented, sainted mother described as "beautiful". Made my whole day when she did that.

Yessirreebob, there I was with a "brand new blued 4" M19", as aforesaid, and I am enthralled. I love this gun! Shot it whenever I could, took it to the deer woods, you name it. Nearly blew my foot off with it once in the deer woods but since I didn't do anything but make a divot in the dirt the story doesn't amount to much. Got my attention, though!

17 years later I blew it up. Another story for another thread but by the time I blew it up it wasn't my only S&W revolver.

And then I went on a quest for another one.....took me a dozen years until one showed up and it was a 2.5" beauty and MAN WAS I HAPPY!!!! Still am! It has a lot of friends these days but it IS way up there in the list of guns that I love.

Nice gun, pardner!

Very true. Good point. I am very happy with my find. It's been a long search.

For the record, in my opinion that's not the worst price in the world in 2014. Your decision was well founded and sometimes we have to pay retail for what we want. Not every great gun is a bargain but, the key is, YOU HAVE IT. :)

A couple of years back I found a really nice pristine 6" 66 at a gunshow. They were asking $575 and, at the time, I thought that was about $50 too high. I tried to dicker, offered $500, then came up to $525, but the seller wouldn't budge. I walked away. I now wish I hadn't. I'd far rather have the 66 in my safe than the $50 in my wallet.

Got it to the range today. No hiccups. I currently have Houge rubber grips on it. Put some Remington .357 Magnum 158 grain semi-jacketed hollow points through it. Very comfortable. Actually I was surprised after hearing how the Model 19 snubbie is such a fire-breather when shooting magnums through it. Perhaps the Houges made the difference. As a comparison I fired a couple cylinders of the same load through my 4" Model 28. The Highway Patrolman was a little more mild, but not that much. Of course recoil is subjective so who knows what the reality is. Anyway I was surprised. I should add that I don't think it would be as pleasant to shoot with the Magna grips.

Also fed it a box of Federal 148 grain +P+ 39 Special. Shot out the center of the target at 15 yards and no lead blowback. Guess the timing is on. I'm very pleased that my long sought after revolver is in good condition.

Sorry guys I didn't think to take photos.

Nice 19/66 2.5 inch barrel guns are hard to find!

Well I am glad that I am not the only one wanting a Model 19/66 in a 2.5 inch barrel. I was looking on UGE Utah Gun Exchange. A model 66 did pop up beautiful gun a safe queen original owner he was first asking I think $850.00 he eventually came down to $750.00 & would have sold it for $700.00 probably worth it but my funds just couldn't stretch that much! I just recently bought a gem of a S&W Model 10 & that's all I can afford right now!:( But with some time one will show up!:D

I bought a 19-4 in 82 for LE. Still have it which is hard to believe. It looks great for 50k rounds. I recently started picking up a 19 when I found them. One is Excellent shape in box. Would have never bought a snubbie 19 back in the day. Just happen to run across one and S&W's aren't an easy find here even in decent condition which I don't settle for. Really pleased with it and hope to fire it soon. Congratulations on your excellent find.

I'm going to buy a set of Pacmayr Compacs for mine. Looks good.

Sir, I agree 100%. Some folks will tell wait something will turn up for less money. Well something may or may not turn up for less money, but in the meantime I've had the pleasure of owning something I really wanted.

So true ......... several years ago (6-8) I dropped $500 to get an anib 6" 586-nuttin when I realized I didn't have a 6" .357.

Offered the LGS "full original MSRP"..... he just laughed

Added a set of Spegel checkered Extended Boot Grips and put it in the safe......... but I at least "have" a 6" .357 if I ever need one.....LOL
