Test drive? Something doesn't look right...

Kentucky - DEALER TAGS

Had a friend who would buy. repair/rebuild, and then resell Insurance Salvage vehicles.
These vehicles usually had no valid tags.

He had a DEALER TAG with strong magnets bolted on it.
Just slap the magnet DEALER TAG on and take a drive.

The DEALER TAGS are Registered with the Licensed Dealer and not any particular vehicle.

I saw a pickup today that was V shaped from the side. The bed and the cab were joined in a V fashion. If the bed had any water in it, it would run toward the cab.

I have never seen that before.

Rusted frame that cracked at mid point. Probably when the bed had the load up front or it shifted to the front.

I was zipping down I-10 one day and got pulled over by FHP. Somehow he knew the tiny sticker on my tag was about a month out of date. I got a warning and renewed it online the first chance I got.

So please tell me how he read a 1” square sticker zooming by at 65 mph, and went to the trouble of chasing me down, when in other states the LEOs don’t even bother?

He didn't read it, his automatic number plate reader (ANPR) system did. The computer connected to the ANPR then phoned home to HQ and your tags came up expired.

In Washington they change up the year tag color every year, and maybe 4-6 colors. Not sure what they do with the month tag colors. Easy to check if the vehicle is current if you know this and next years colors.

And I specialize in high speed motion analysis. I have no idea why they don't tie together plate readers and IR cameras to count heat blooms in vehicles in the car pool lanes. You could send out a quarter mil in tickets a day around here, and have photo proof if they contest.

The same in Georgia. Each year is a separate color. Each tag has the month of renewal and the proper year's color. Tag is due for renewal on your birthday. Happy birthday to me!

No tags —- who do you send tickets to?

A lot of politicians want law enforcement officers to ignore these "petty" crimes such as expired tags because they target certain groups of people.

Back in the day, if I needed to write any tickets, all I had to do was to drive past the state liquor stores. I almost ALWAYS could find a vehicle with expired tags there. Money for booze, not for vehicle tag renewals. :D

To quote my late father, "I've yet to see a poor bloke short of beer and cigarettes".

We get a LOT of registration scofflaws here. People move to Vegas with a fairly late model vehicle and discover that the registration fees are tied to the original MSRP and the age of the vehicle. Some have been dumb enough to move here for a low paying job without sufficient research on the real costs of living here. Some look at the numbers being demanded and flat out refuse to pay. Then their licenses are suspended, the insurance lapses and it's off to the races every time they are lit up for speeding or get involved in a wreck.

We could do with that here, except speeding or red light citations purely by camera or video are illegal under the Nevada constitution. Right to question your accuser and all that.

You want draconian, go to the UK. Speed or a light camera gets a vehicle and the citation goes to the registered owner. That person must then reveal who was driving so that the fine and points go to the deserving party. Don't want to name a friend or your spouse? That does not fly. Not revealing who was driving is an offense usually resulting in a hefty fine added onto the original citation and extra points. More than 12 in total once that is done, you get a ban. It was you but you think you can game the system by exercising your right to silence? Right not to self incriminate isn't recognized for these offenses. Oh, did I mention that most of Britain is covered with enough radar traps to cook your lunch and render you sterile?

Here's a high profile example.

Bianca Williams banned from driving and given 18 penalty points

Think that's bad, the Swiss and the French will do instant roadside vehicle seizures if your average on a toll road gets stupid. The gendarme will take the keys and indicate the nearest bus stop for your convenience. Some may recall Clarkson and Hammond of Top Gear falling foul of this in the South of France.

When I began driving a million years ago, Texas would give you a new plate each year. Black with white letters in even years, White with black letters in odd years.

I was born in Newfoundland, and since NM doesn't have a front plate I thought it would be cool to have a 56 Newfi plate on the front of my truck. I would bid on the Bay, and they would always go for more than I was willing to pay. Finally, a seller in St. John's contacted me because he saw that I had bid on all his license plate auctions. When I told him why he shipped me one for $25.

The wife, who was born in Texas in 1958, thought that it was a neat idea. It took me about 5 minutes and $5 to get a 1958 Texas plate, seeing as there are a whole lot more of them, and it good shape, than there are Newfoundland plates.

Here in N.W. Indiana most of long time residents buy new registration stickers every year. For some reason the new residents from Chicago and it's suburbs have special dispensation and NEVER EVER register their vehicles in Indiana. Most of them are on the special list I guess.

Washington uses 4 colors for the year and month stickers. The year tabs are one color all year, and they rotate every year. The month tabs also rotate among the 4 colors, each used for 1/4 of the year.

Enforcing petty traffic is a proven means of improving traffic safety and interdicting criminals. The folks who let little stuff side are often crummy drivers, with DUI/Suspended histories, some of which are staggering. One can also get a staggering number of serious criminals that way.A relatively recent example is the OK troops who caught Tim McVeigh.
