I have a Pre-24 5-screw .44spl with a 4 in. Barrel in bright blue finish. Ser. # S107XXX. I also have documentation that this revolver came from Famous Texas Ranger Robert "Bob" Goss. I got it from former National shooting Champion Wes Whatley who was good friends with Ranger Goss. I am interested in the production year of this firearm, I am thinking about 1955. Also I would be interested in your thoughts of the value of this revolver. It looks to be about 90-95 % condition, but Ranger Goss did put S&W Smooth rosewood grips on it. It also has a trigger shoe on it.

WOW....great find....

1954/5 is about right...

As to value....4" Pre-24s are rare....easy $5K plus for the Texas Ranger documentation....

Elmer's sold for $12K...

Here is a brief article. I would say 1955 would be close. Value would be based on the type of providence (content, etc.) and whether the mere fact he owned it is of any value vs. him having actually used in some situation of historical importance. Being that his career spanned mainy 20's to 40's chances are the 1950 Target was just another gun and based on the amount of ammo he used up from 1955 and 1968 and the condition of that gun, it wasnt one he used a lot.

That is one heck of an entrance! Welcome to the Forum, again. I notice this is your second post in over a year and a half here! I hope you have gleaned a lot of information in that time.

By all means do the research, as it only adds value to the gun in case you want to sell or pass on to family members.

Need a letter but S118800 was 11/54. I suspect this shipped in 54 unless delayed for some reason.

Thanks Nightowl, I have a small gunshop here in Kilgore, Tx where Bob Goss was chief of Police in the 1930's. I read a lot of the info here but, I usually don't have much input.

That is an outstanding revolver. As a Texan, I'd love to find something like that to cherish forever. I will never own something like that though as I expect it would sell for around $5k even before you take into account the provenance.

I haven't been posting much lately as I've had my enthusiasm tempered (more like destroyed). I need to find something like that to get it going again :)

Welcome. I am only about half an hour West of you, north of Tyler, near Lindale.
