The .25 Auto.

Personally guys and gals, I think caliber size arguments are just mental and verbal gymnastics!

So how come the Marines don't carry .22 revolvers? They take great pride in their marksmanship and with .22 Long Rifle revolvers, they could carry more stuff.

I don't think any of the regulars here think there is a magic bullet, Moondawg, only that there are top performers. There is a reason that there probably isn't a police department left in the country that uses .38 spl. 158 gr. RNL, and that's a much better choice than the .25 ACP. Among the best loads in 9mm, 40, .357 SIG, and .45 ACP there isn't going to be any measureable difference in terminal performance. A person can choose a load tailored to what their likely needs are and what their gun likes though. Someone who spends a lot of time in cars may feel that bonded bullets like Speer Gold Dot are a better bullet for their needs. A person in Detroit, Michigan might opt for 158 gr. bullets in his .357 because deeper penetration might be an advantage against potential 300 lb. gangsters. In communities plagued with Chicano and Asian gangs 110s might be the better route due to overpenetration concerns against likely smaller assailants.

As I mentioned a loooong time ago in this (I think) thread, I carry a little old vest pocket Colt .25 in my pocket almost like spare change. I don't plan on using it as it is usually gun number three. The .25 isn't that efficient, but I do know two things about it: I sure have seen lots of shot-dead people made that way by point blank .25s to the head, liver, kidneys, spleen, or lungs. I also know that somebody about to become shot is not going to be interested in comparative ballistics, he is gonna be interersted in avoiding being shot at all!! If I ever need mine, and I remember I have it, it's going to be a contact shot. People die getting manually stabbed with 6 inch ice picks.
Shot people often die because they think they are supposed to die when shot. Most would simply disengage if they thuoght they werte going to be shot with any firearm. JM.02W

Interesting thread and opinions. Ten pages suggest to me that there's an awful lot of them still popular, for one reason or another.

My slant. I've owned and carried many of them. Some were surprisingly accurate at 50 feet and eminently reliable to feed and eject. Still others, were complete dogs and I'm not necessarily referring to the cheaper makes. I've had good ones and bad ones, whether expensive or cheap.

35 years ago, I was raiding an after hours joint that was a notorious hangout for dope dealers. A 15 year old boy who was a lookout, was hidden among a bunch of barstools. I passed him, never noticed him, my attention on the ensuing brawl of retreating patrons, one of whom was the object of the evenings activities. He had multiple warrants and I was there exclusively to collar him.

As I passed the kid, I caught his reflection in the bar mirror and turned, as he came up with a small auto, an Astra Cub .22 Short, and fired at me. As I saw the piece come up, I drew my weapon and raised my weak hand to my chest as he fired. He shot me in the weak hand. The slug skimmed over the top of my hand under the skin and exited out of the wrist. A few inches higher, and I don't know if I'd be here to tell you about it. I must say it hurt like hell, bled very little considering but, my hand blew up like a cartoon character who whacked his thumb with a mallet. Two other cops stepped in between me and the shooter and disarmed him. I was unable to get a shot off because of their "quick action" for which they later received commendations.

Aside from that experience, a fellow I knew who had several cars stolen or burglarized, came home to find a fat assed car thief half inside the broken window of his new car, removing the stereo. He shot the rat in the posterior, emptying the magazine, 3 in each cheek. A good gun for just revenge. He said he felt the punishment fit the crime, as I remember.

Different tools, for different jobs.

They do serve a purpose and can be effective if you successfully hit vulnerable anatomy, which at best is tricky. Eyes, throat or contact head shots. I agree it would always be best to have a larger caliber weapon but, I also agree with others here that it is marginally better than no gun at all. There are so many .32/.380 and 9mm compact autos on the market today I don't think I would gamble given the odds.
