The 29 Is A Classic

So the wife wanted to go to the range and practice today. She carries a new Sig 290RS and she wanted to work with it. I took the little 638 I carry and I got my 29 out of the cabinet. The range was packed and we had to wait to get a lane. Once we go in our lane we took turns shooting and loading our plain little guns without notice. Then I took out the king and put the first 6 down range. Next thing I know half the guys there are watching me and look at my gun. I fired off about half a box and took the center out of my target. We finished up, packed up and went out in the lobby. Guys were coming up to me to ask about my magnum and commenting on how well I handle it. I shot just as well with the little .38 but no one noticed that. The "Dirty Harry" is still a crowd pleaser.

That loud KAWOOOOM usually draws attention!! I took a couple of my 629s to the range last week and while I was setting up I heard the KAWOOOM. I had to look and it was an older gentleman and his grand-daughter shooting his old 29s. I later heard him tell her, "Just think, the first gun you ever shot was a 44 magnum!" It brought a tear to my eye!!!!

Took my 29 out to the range with a bunch of the younger guys from the firehouse last fall. They all had their high capacity plastic stuff and were blasting away like ammo was going out of style. I brought out Dirty Harry, and there were few comments..... until the famous KAWOOOOM!!!!!..... and then the PABOING!!.... when the sound of lead impacting the steel plate at the far end of the range got back to us on the firing line. I was the first, and last, of our group to hit that target that day, It was kinda cool as I am the geezer at the firehouse, and I was able to defend 'old school' on several fronts without speaking a word. All of a sudden everyone wanted a 29. That classic design makes new fans each time she goes to the range.

For years I had the factory ported 629 Classic, with the big top port it was double kaboom loud. I carried it as a back up on hunts. Heavy sucker. I've since bought a lighter 4" 629.

When I lived in the St. Louis area I shot at Busch Range, it is run by the MO Dept of Conservation. Very nice.

Right after the SW 500 came out they posted signs, NO 50 CAL pistols!

I had taken a box to shoot in the 44 and some rifles. I fired some in the ported 44, a range volunteer tapped me on the shoulder, pointed at the NO 50 sign. I said nope 44 and showed him the box. He said that is a 50. I said no sir. Someone else came over, they talked, he said it is a 50, shoot it today and don't bring it back. I shot often and knew most of the guys, did not know these 2. I took it back many times and no problems.

After that I took one of my 300 WBYs, it shook the roof. after a 3 shot group check I could shoot anything as their ears rang even with protection.

Ya gotta love any 29/629.
