THE 460 for hunting

The 460 is in house now and I ordered a Leupold VX-3, 2.5 to 8 with a 32mm objective, 1" tube. The 10.5 inch performance center model looks like it has a weaver size base.

Now I need to purchase a good set of rings. If anyone has some experience with this base, ring combination, please let me know what has worked for you.

Rings for 460 XVR

I have Warner rings on my 460. They handle the recoil and after the original zeroing (zeroing?), I have not touched them since (2005)

The Performance Model I have has a weaver style rail on the top for scope mounting. The Warner rings I looked at on line are made for their bases.

Did you purchase the Warner base and rings or just the rings?

I also love my .460 !
I guess mine would be closer to a 8 3/8" barrel.
Authough i'm not a hunter and mine dosn't have a scope, its still a blast to shoot and very accurate.
A bit louder report than the .500 as well as has a longer target range.

I found what I was looking for. They are the Warne 201LS rings. These are medium height, 1" tube, silver finish with quick disconnect feature. Thanks for the help guys.

Used 275 gr COR®BON DPX on both. I reload but haven't used my 460 ammo for hunting.



Good penetration but they didn't open up much.

225FTX will handle them. Save the DPX for something a little bigger

That is the heart. It weighed 7.5 lbs.

I occasionally shoot out to 200 meters with my 460 and shooting off a rock solid benchrest and I have shot as little as 4 MOA but it takes a SERIOUSLY steady hold and exceptional muscle and breathing control to shoot consistiantly at 200 meters. I more prefer shooting at 100 yds which is a more realistic distance because I like to shoot at 9" paper plates. Keeping all my shots on a 9" plate at 200 meters gets tough, 100 yds is more doable. My most accurate load is the 200 gr FTX and 50 gr of H110. I'm at about 2180 fps from my 12" XVR. I had an issue with my past scope setup (pictured) as I was running out of scope elevation trying to dope out to 200 meters. My Burris 3-12x is 1/8 moa. I ended up buying the new Burris XTR sig adjustable rings and by adding 10 moa of elevation i'm now able to dope from a 100 yd zero out to 200 meters easily with elevation adj to spare.

what kind of shooting stick do you use?..i;ve fell in love with my bog pods..

I use the Primos Trigger Stick if I'm close to the road. It is long and a little on the heavy side.

Most of the time it's a lightweight monopod from WalMart. It's light, only 21" long and fits in my daypack. I added the camo tape to the top section:



I use a 44 Mag Stealth Hunter with iron sights and a monopod for antelope but usually end up harvesting the animal off hand.

I am really not a hunter, prairie dogs are all I do and that's a once-a-year trip. But without going too deeply in to it...

When you take an animal of -THAT- size, what in the heck happens next?! I can't see moving that beast even if you had a football team to do the work. Drag it with vehicles? Use earth-moving heavy equipment to lift it?

Did the animal get weighed? How? Truck scale at a weight station?!

Seriously, that is just one breath-taking creature. I'm running out of words.
