Along with Tesla, Twitter, and SpaceX, Elon Musk owns The Boring Company, which builds underground tunnel systems to help alleviate traffic congestion.

The project has begun in Las Vegas and thus far has four stops (called Loops). Three at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and one at the new Resorts World Hotel connecting it to the Convention Center. Eventually there will be 50+ Loops. I'm surprised this project made it past the Las Vegas Taxi Mafia!

The tunnels are about 40 feet underground and 12 feet in diameter. If you don't like enclosed places you may feel a bit claustrophobic.

The wife and I took a ride in it today on our day off. Pretty neat!

Some pictures are below, showing our Gullwing Tesla Model X, the wife getting in the car, and pictures from the rear seat as we traversed the tunnel system. The different color lighting in the tunnels was pretty cool. I don't know if it's always like that or just being done now to mimic Christmas lights. :)

If you click on the pictures they should enlarge.

They are not quite what they once were. For sure they prevented the monorail going to the airport. For that piece of idiocy they deserve to staked out over an ants nest in the desert and smeared with syrup. Dunno what would get them first, the heat, the ants, or the badgers.

There is, or was, a plan afoot to have Elon bore a tunnel between the San Antonio Airport and downtown. I don't know where that idea stands at present.

In reference to the questions about an emergency or car break down. This link will take you to Boring's website where they discuss such things as safety, security, earthquakes, emergency exits, etc.

Loop — The Boring Company

I also asked the driver about a car breaking down and he said it's happened once since he's been driving The Loop (about a year and a half). The cars in front of the disabled vehicle just continued on, and the cars behind it had to go in reverse to exit the tunnel. Once all cars were out of the tunnel a couple of guys went in and pushed the disabled car out.

I hate to think what would happen if there was a major accident or fire down there !!

I'll pass.

Fire is always a potential issue in tunnels, but in this case major accident is highly unlikely due to the limited speeds and operating procedures.

Did you go to the link I posted above where The Boring Company addresses such things? Here's an excerpt about an emergency or fire.

"Loop tunnels are outfitted with emergency exits, fire detection systems, fire suppression systems, and a fire-rated first responder emergency communication system. The systems are tested frequently with local Police and Fire Departments.

"Loop vehicles and passengers have direct communications to an Operational Control Center (manned 24/7) via Blue Light Stations, LTE cell service, and WiFi.

"Loop tunnels are fully illuminated - and if an incident does occur, Loop has 100% camera coverage (no blind spots!)."

Certainly any mass transit / public transportation system can suffer a disaster, but the tunnel system was not built out of ignorance or lack of concern for safety.

That's their plan? Really?

Badgers! We don't need no stinking Badgers!

Thought you might.

PS: another reason Ruthie hates the tunnel...

This sits near the tunnel.

She wouldn't like driving in Britain, then. My visit there earlier this year was a wake up call on how wide vehicles have got wider, but 95% of the roads over there are the same width they've always been.
