Never got to see Sinatra or my main man, Nat King Cole, in concert. :(

Being of more recent vintage ... I did see Billy Joel (when he had hair), Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Tony Bennett, and (how's this for a blast from the past) Spyro Gyra (at the famous Hollywood Bowl) back in the day.

BUT ... the coolest concert I attended was none other than the "Hi De Do" man himself, Cab Calloway, in Los Angeles in the 1980's. He was old then, but, man, he could still belt out the songs. "Minnie the Moocher" never sounded so good. He was still "hep".

Then there was the time I saw Farrah Fawcett. :D Not a concert, but a tennis match against Bill Cosby ... but that's for another thread. Need to dig out the photos ...

I saw Lou Christie as part of an oldies concert in Philadelphia with Fabian, Lesley Gore and some other old time performers. His big hits when he was recording were "Lightning Strikes" and "Rhapsody in the Rain." He finished up doing a Motown hit "Mickey's Monkey." This was the first time he had been on the oldies concert circuit and when he came out he held nothing back. The place went nuts, and at curtain call the whole place went crazy for him again. With that performance, Lou Christie went back out on the oldies circuit and I got to see him in concert in subsequent concerts.

Back in my misspent youth I was an oldies disk jockey so I tried to see the old time performers while they were still able to perform. I regret not being able to see Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Marty Robbins and Roy Orbison in concert.

Took my wife on Valentine's Day several years ago to see Allison Krauss and Union Station, backed by the Nashville Chamber Orchestra at the Ryman Auditorium.

I've been to a lot of concerts, but this was head and shoulders above all the rest as far as quality of sound and professional ability.

I've seen a lot.....

Elton John was great and Yes was memorable but my favorite is Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. He has a lot of depth as a musician and is a rather complex person.

It was kind of a priviledge to see Bob Dylan

I haven't seen much of the older crowd in concert.

One of my first concerts was Led Zeppelin at the old Tampa Stadium. They were halfway through their forth song, “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, when a huge thunderstorm deluged the stadium. The amps and electrical equipment put on quite a light show of it’s own as Plant, Page, Bonham, and Jones ran from the stage. The field turned into a muddy moshe pit with hippie girls stripping and frolicking naked in the mud while waiting for the band to resume playing. After about twenty minutes, one of the crew came out to tell everyone the concert would be postponed until the following night because of damage to the sound and lighting system. Then things got pretty ugly. My friends and I made it out of there just as cops in riot gear were getting involved. I think the fact that we all had short hair helped us out and none of us were arrested. I was only 15 and that set the bar pretty high for memorable concerts. I’ve seen many since then, but none that stand out like that.

Diana Krall.

Roger Waters gets honorable mention, but only because we were under the Battersea set and pyramid. The end of Eclipse was psychedelic. :D

Hands down, the magical evening my late wife and I spent listening to Mel Torme and George Shearing, with no accompaniment but a very good young stand-up bass player.

Tied for second would be two and a half uninterrupted hours of Willie Nelson or hearing a young Marian McPartland in 1955, my freshman year of college.

Third place, another tie: oboist Heinz Holliger or Yo Yo Ma.

I guess my musical tastes are kind of all over the place.

My wife and I did see a little band called Union Station whose fiddler and vocalist was a fifteen-year-old named Alison Krauss. Carol and I just looked at each other and agreed that the kid would bear watching, as she was going to go places.

Some of my favorites in no particular order:

Tony Bennett (I believe it was his 70th birthday)
Rod Stewart (2 times) Maggie Mae is one of my favorites...
Michael Buble
Neil Diamond (in the 80s) second row.
Eagles (2 times, once in the 70s)
Emile Pandolfi over dinner with my wife, was about three tables from him as he played Christmas Music.

all were cool...

Wish I'd seen Frank... (always remember when he died a stranger who I ran into gave me a Frank CD and said the chairman of the board was dead)
