The emperor has no clothes

I am being pessimistically cautious. It is way too early to make meaningful projections. My biggest concern is people without health insurance who avoid medical care until they are desperate. That is a substantial group who could infect many people while postponing diagnosis and treatment.

That said, I am not wearing a mask unless I am sick and trying to prevent spreading my cold, flu or whatever (as recommended). I am washing my hands more frequently and carrying hand sanitizer for occasional use. I am avoiding some places, like our local casino, where many people touch chips, buttons and screens that are not cleaned often enough for my peace of mind. I am also avoiding friends with school age kids, classrooms are germ and virus petri dishes as previously mentioned.

Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

P.S. I am very happy that Washington votes by mail. :D

You put me in a men's room where everybody's singing happy birthday an I'm beatin feet!

Nah! It's only a problem if you get that guy who thinks he can sing while you're wondering how he can be so out of tune with only one mouth.:D

I'll bet Rusty is getting flashbacks to bad singers now.

US Air Force flu shot 1970, 1971 because of "orders". I found out "flu shot" was not listed in WHO Shot Record so I refused in 1972. 15 guys on day shift got the flu shot, 5 guys on night shift refused because I did. Next day, Day Shift was sicker than dogs, aching swollen arms, joint pain, and felt terrible. Night shift was healthy except supervisor who got flu shot. Found out flu shot was ineffective that year.

I have never had another flu shot, my primary care physician is very angry at me (presently) for not getting flu shot, and I have never had the flu. My wife and mother-in-law are hand washers and wipe everything with bleach disinfectant wipes. I keep telling them that exposure to 'bugs' strengthens their immune systems, but they don't believe me.

I have had pneumonia and shingles vaccines -- zero ill effects.

How do you know you've washed your hands long enough?

You've sung the happy birthday song twice. No kidding, that's what I heard one of the talking heads say.

You put me in a men's room where everybody's singing happy birthday an I'm beatin feet!

I always heard you should wash your hands the length of time it takes you to sing the ABC song...

Have you ever wondered about the kid you went to school with who always used to say "Why do I need to study biology, math, science, economics, history or social studies? I'll never use them in real life."? Well, that's how we ended up with flat-earthers, anti-vaxxers, science deniers, and sovereign...

Well said. I am seeing a lot of people making comments where they seem to relish their ignorance and they are unwilling or unable to vet out facts from fiction and truth from lies. Many of these same people when the facts don't support them just fabricate lies to fit into their twisted narrative of things. It is dangerous for them and the country. Ignorance is not bliss. The truth and facts matter when the lives of people are at risk.

Be afraid, be very afraid!

Just like gun CONTROL.

Control the sheep with fear.

So vaccine technology in the early 1970s wasn't up to much and gave most an adverse reaction. Hardly a surprise and I'm pushed to see the relevance to the current situation 50 years on.

Diminishing the facts about of ANY contagious disease is foolhardy. We shouldn't be having these conversations about personal health and safety just because this time it is the corona virus - we should be having them about all contagious diseases in general, but somehow we never do. THIS IS THE EXACT REASON WHY THE DEATH RATE FOR THE SEASONAL FLU RUNS BETWEEN 5,000 - 60,000 PER YEAR IN THE US ALONE AND WE VIRTUALLY IGNORE IT.
EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

Should we panic about this? No.
Should we deal with this in a reasonable and logical manner? Oh hells yes.

The kids that didn't see the need are now setting policy because most of what you mentioned is no longer taught in public schools.

Not sure what your all cap rant about people dying from the flu is about? Yeah, people die, sucks but they do.

Take your precautions, get right with God and rock on.

I did some simple math...75,000 cases in China represents 0.00005 of the chinese population.

And in the US the percentage is 0.00000005 of the population

More people in the US have denge fever.

Gang, for some reason, I feel that some basic points have been missed. A few months back, it was reported that the corona virus samples had been stolen by the Chinese from a Canadian laboratory. Maybe accurate or not. Next, reports of Chinese soldiers "containing" residents at gunpoint suddenly stop coming out of China. Has anyone noticed that the greatest preponderance of cases are appearing in countries/regions with open borders? Also notice that the occasional "mass shooting" is not getting the news coverage earlier shootings have?

I am not an alarmist, nor do I ignore facts. Has anyone even contemplated that the "pandemic" event that may be facing us is not necessarily an act of God/nature?

Meanwhile, break out another package of popcorn!

oh yeah, Steve Bannon in War Room has been saying the drug lab is ground zero in Wuhaan or wherever and that it is biowar. Listen to him and he can make his case. I'll go along with a conspiracy theory and there are trillions at stake. without talking politics I'm calling the virus political. So much going on right now...trillions at stake.

I pretty much live like a hermit anyway. Probably don't come in direct contact with more than about a half dozen people in a week.
Way too early in this game for me to worry. I also have serious doubts about some of the news reports. I'll wait to see how it plays out before I get all panicky about it.

FWIW:

Check the stats from ladder13's post and assess the baseline - so far, not bad.

Three relevant points: degree of transmission, cumulative effects and mutation. All are uncertain, and likely no big deal, but could go wonky.

The degree of transmission - even if comparable to "the flu" - is another load on the medical and social services systems. Stay home, don't play with sick things, personal hygiene and social distancing, and don't let the dog slobber on ya if the dog's been traveling. (Coronaviruses are common in dogs, and the Hong Kong patient's dog did test low positive... indefinite, but not good.)

Cumulative effects could be trouble - if this gets out of control, the economic and critical services (fire, police, medical) will be affected. Stay home, don't play with sick things, personal hygiene and social distancing, and keep a week's worth of food on the shelf...for Floridians, Hurricane season's early.

Mutation is the unknown. If COVID -19 doesn't mutate, probably containable, similar to the annual flu. If it does, a range of possibilities, from a big nothing to cross species spread (uh oh) to a nasty strain, a la the 2nd wave of Spanish influenza. The weak-positive dog diagnosis is likely a non-issue, but given the bat source, can't be ignored. Stay home, don't play with sick things, yada yada.

As for the herd panic, ya can't fix stupid. Keeping your head when all about you are losing theirs is as true today as in 1910. Some cold reasoning and prudent prep can go a long way; the herd here seems pretty good at that. Popcorn optional!

Either way you slice it, after the last 3 1/2 years of NICE growth in my 401K gone now, I may have to wait until 70 to retire!

BINGO.....a cause to use the implement. I'm still mourning the loss of all my Ebola friends.

A stock market correction= the big players cashed out.
