This incident occurred at about the same time as my post " Model 19 cocked and locked". We had an influx of new rookies about this time and many old time officers found themselves training one. Mostly younger officers, like me, were saddled with this task however, when one called in sick an old timer got the rookie.
This happened one week when the senior officer came down with the flu. The unfortunate rookie was assigned to what we soon will learn was an unfortunate old head with many years of service. This old head was an a real head knocker and would not tolerate improper conduct from anyone, especially street scum. He did not carry handcuffs, he carried a pigin rope and a pair of pliers in his hip pocket. The rookie was overwhelmed with all of this. and was told to stay out of the way when "police work" was in progress. After numerous disturbance calls, shooting/cutting ambulance calls and many bar fights, the week was up and the old head would be free to police alone.
As the pair were walking into the station to turn in their work card and shop keys, the rookie asked " sir, can I ask you a question?" and the old head replied " sure kid, what's on your mind?" "sir.....................would it be ok for me to load my gun?".
The curtin will drop on this incident and after nearly 50 years most of this will be forgotten however, I will never ever forget this !!
post script...the rookie did not last very long and the old head took a desk job a short time later. What were the piggin rope and pliers for, I will leave that to your collective imagination.
