My dad Major(retired) Arthur R. Young, Jr. passed away today at the age of 94. He was a 2nd lieutenant in the 809 Tank Destroyer Battalion during WWII and won the Silver Star for capturing several Germans that had hidden in the cellar of a house somewhere in The Netherlands. He tossed a wooden shoe down in the cellar and hollered grenade in German and they surrendered.

He set a National record with the M14 at 1000 yards in Oak Ridge Tennessee in the early 60's.

He is part of the reason I'm a gun nut.

Michael Savage said it far better than I can.
"We quite simply owe that generation all the credit for us not speaking German, being a bar of soap, or a lampshade".

Son and family

Very sorry for your loss. As the son of aWW11 and Korean war veteran, I share your thoughts, we owe more than we know to our parents and their contemporaries. They put aside their lives and went and saved the world and then came home and raised families and rebuilt society. May your father rest in peace, he most certainly deserves our admiration and respect.

The generation lost 2. My 86 yr old grandfather passed Wednesday. He was a Navy medic in WWII but never spoke of his service or what he saw.

I'm very sorry for your loss and unfortunately I understand what you're going through.

My heart felt condolences to both of the posters who recently lost their loved ones. My dad and hero died a little over 3 years ago at age 86. Rest assured they're all at peace now and are our guardian angels.

God Bless,

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. You all will be in my prayers.

A salute to Major Arthur R. Young, Jr. May he rest in peace.

I am sorry for your loss. But I thank your father for capturing a few Germans in my country. His act with the woodenshoe is great.

Condolences on your loss, which is also a loss for our country. The "greatest generation" gave their all in the WWII period. They grew up in the depression and endured hardship after hardship to finally excel beyond belief.

My next door neighbor when I was growing up was also a WWII vet, and, like your dad, served in a tank destroyer outfit. He was there at the Battle of the Bulge. We are still fast friends with his widow, who was a hospital nurse in attendance at the birth of three of our children.

May your dad rest in peace, and you should be secure in the knowledge that he was one of America's finest.

My condolences to you and your family and heartfelt thanks to your father.

Sincere condolences to both posters. My Father, a WWII veteren of 33 months in the ETO, is still the head of our family. He still works a 40 hour week at 88+ years. May all those who have passed, who took an oath and served their country honorably, rest in peace.
