Two good ole bubbas were quail huntin on old farmers land. Had hunted there for years. Tom hollers "Hey Pete come look at this." Pete comes over and Tom is standing by the biggest hole, about 15 ft in diameter. "Gollee" said Pete, "wonder how deep it is? I can't see the bottom." Tom opinies "lets get sumpin big, push it over the edge, then listen till it hits bottom. Then we'll have an idee how deep it is." They found and old tractor transmission in the brush, drug it over to the edge of the hole and carefully listening for the "thud" as they pushed it over. About four seconds after a goat come runnin and dove head first into the hole. "Golle" they both said in unison, shortly thereafter they heard two distinct thuds from the bottom.

Farmer walks up "Say, you boys seen my goat?" "YEAH, he just come a running and dove head first into this here hole."

"That's impossible" quipped the farmer, "i had him chained to a transmission."

In a case of life imitating art, me and my buddy Mark were hiking at night in the Hoosier National Forest. The Forest Service was trying to eliminate vehicular traffic through the forest and had removed a bridge. Only the ramps on either end still existed. We walked up to the edge and looked down into darkness. It could have been six inches or 600 feet. Without a word Mark just stepped off the edge. It was like he was Wiley Coyote in the cartoons, he was just sucked into the abyss. There one second, gone the next. Literally blink of the eye stuff. His disappearance was so sudden that it made the wait for the THUD seem all that much longer. In my mind's eye it lasts several Mississippis. Finally there was the thud followed on its heels by an OOPH!

Fortunately he was not hurt (he was very "relaxed" at the time) and it added to the list of things he no longer does. He no longer steps into an unknown hole, he no longer shoots propane bottles, and he no longer sticks forks into electrical outlets.
