The Horses are at the Gate

Look forward every spring to the Derby and another chance for a Triple Crown Winner. In the early 80's my wife and I had a few successful runners in Southern California. I really miss those days as standing in the Winners Circle is a fabulous feeling. We left the business because financially it could not be justified at that time.

Few folks realize how tough it is to even get a horse to the track to run its first race. Winning is very hard at the lowest claiming levels and moving into stakes company takes an unbelievable amount of luck. There are always anomalies such as California Chrome, a $10,000 horse, but spending Hundreds of thousands, even millions guarantees nothing. Of the thousands of horses racing, today only 20 made it to the Derby, with one of those being scratched because of who knows what. Runny nose? Sore hoof? Stiff knee? Running a fever?

It is a wonderful, very tough, expensive game.

Very slow time today, 2:03+.

Celebrated with fried chicken, green beans, cole slaw, biscuits, iced tea. Watched the race and sipped some Woodford Reserve.

That's livin'.

I watched the race and although I'm not into horse racing that much, I liked the story behind the breeders / owners of the winner and was happy to see them win the roses. The guy in the picture below however is ridiculous and I couldn't believe my eyes when he came on the screen with "his" pick!

No spig mint?
I'd never contaminate good Bourbon whiskey with anything as vile as mint. Mint Juleps have ruined more Bourbon whiskey than all the revenuers combined. :D :D :D

PS - I'm Kentucky born and bred. I was taught early on, that it's a sin to cut Bourbon with anything but water and/or ice.
