The last revolvers issued by Iowa State Patrol were S&W 686 ,this revolver shows being shipped in 1982. The Patrol was still using full flap cross draw holsters so their guns were well protected. ISP had S&W stamp their should patch/logo onto side plate. The troopers badge/ID number is on the other side of the revolver.I bought this , a blue model 13 and a model 66 from a trooper pilot who retired in 1992.

I remember an Iowa State Trooper driving to Georgia in the winter of 1991 to teach Standardized Field Sobriety. He was sporting the 686 in the crossdraw holster. Seems like the LTD was tan with a yellow seal on the door and no other markings.

The patrol went from black to white to tan to black and now they are buying an array of colors. The door emblem is the same as their should patch, some additional markings have been added to the cars.

I LIKE it! Duty guns seem to all have their own interesting pasts, don't they. Were you able to get any anecdotal info on the acceptance and use of the 686 by the troopers?

Were the Model 13 and 66 guns also Dept. issue - or privately owned by the retired trooper?

Thanks,

Jerry

Sweet, I love old duty guns. My last duty revolver was a 4" 686 just like that. I too had the option of buying it but like a fool I said no.

I would love to come across an old dyt weapon like that. I think they are neat.

The Montana Hwy Patrol issued 4" M-28's up until 1988 or 1989 when we went to the 5906's. I started in 1985 with a NIB gun and bought it after the change over for $114. Still have it sitting in the safe.

Sadly in the name of "uniformity" all of us were mandated to use the old rubber Pachmayer grips in place of the magna service stocks. All of the wooden stocks, many from S prefix guns, were all turned into Supply and sat in a box on a shelf. When the 9mm's showed up and the surplus guns were sold that box of stocks, nearly two hundred of them....was THROWN OUT!!!

I like the issue weapons and living in Washington go for WSP items. I have a consecutive pair of Win model 12s, a Beretta 92, a 38/44 and this the last revolver the WSP used a model 66 4 inch. Yes those are the grips they issued them with.

I need one of those.......

I have seen a ton of WSP marked 870's but no handguns, even though I own a few that were WSP guns(as they came in on trade to my buddies shop)

and do own the last duty guns the Kitsap Shierf used.....the one I own is the ONE that the Deputy carried when I was arrested in 1985 :D

The last Police Officer, in my town, to carry a revolver used his personal nickel 4" 586. He's now carrying the issued pistol, an H&K USP in .40 S&W.

Peter,

I see that Oakland PD 686 is set up for tap dancing - nice!

Jerry

I think it's a door knocker,,,, Just so when you want to rap loud on a door you dont hurt your knuckles,,,,, And it matches nicely
