I'm a sucker for unique S&Ws, so I couldn't pass up this Model 58. This is the seller's story:

"This gun was special ordered by a former Smith & Wesson employee. The story goes he hand selected the pieces of the revolver while at the factory."

I plan to pick it up tomorrow and send Roy a factory letter request form on Monday.

Very interesting gun.. Be interested in the letter from Roy

I also seen that gun for sale and thought it was really neat with the lanard ring, let us know what the letter says it will be very interesting to find out, COOL GUN!

Good Luck Jeremy.................hope the letter confirms story. You could have a rare one there. Hopefully he special ordered the parts thru the office and not his Supervisor (under the table/ undocumented).

Fascinating!

Supposedly the original production period of the Model 58 was from 1964 to 1978. Thus the final run would have been in the N500000 range of serial numbers. The N range continued until 1983 when N932999 was used. After that, S&W started with the ABC1234 type serial numbering series. Thus, this gun would appear to be 1983 or after. The box and label look like 1990's or newer. Very interesting!

Amazing!

I used to see such "specials" come out of S&W back in the 1960's and 1970's. I had thought they had things tightened up after that, except for Performance Center items. This piece is unique and may be quite valuable for that reason.

I picked up the Model 58 today, and I have a question. Do Model 58s have matte finish top straps like Model 28s? This one does.

N5000,000 for the last 58? I would be surprised. I have N1783000 that was shipped in June of 1977. That serial was likely manufactured around 1973 or so but these were selling so slowly that it didn't leave the factory until 4 years later. I bet they sold guns from inventory without making any new ones for the last few years.

That odd 58 is very interesting and I hope some info can be found on it.

Did you pay a rare and collectible price for it?

Yes.

They also have modified magna grips. Yours has standard magnas, but I suspect they might be original. Are they numbered to the gun?

I purchased an 8 3/8 model 53-2 a few years back, it was stamped 53, and so I lettered it. Came back as having been a special order gun shipped Feb. 1979, 5 years after they stopped making them. Roy said it was probably the last model 53-2 shipped.

SaxonPig, I paid the going rate for a "regular" pinned and recessed Model 58 in the same condition.

No30, the grips are unnumbered.

That is awsome. That is a real nice gun with a neat story behind it.

Now nobody can say that ALL Model 58's came with PC Magna grips.

Cool gun...I wonder why it has a lanyard ring.
