"Last night I dreamed a deadly dream,
beyond the isle of Skye,
I saw a dead man win a fight,
and I think that man was I."

This eerie verse starts and ends a movie based on the true events of "Operation mincemeat", one of the great hoaxes of WWII secret warfare.

Anyone ever seen it?

Anyone ever seen it? No, but please don't keep me in suspense..

The gist of it:

Before the invasion of Sicily the British developed a plan to convince the Germans that the target of the invasion was Sardinia and the attack on Sicily was just a feint.

To manage this, they created a fake Major William Martin who was supposed to carry secret messages to Egypt, but would have died in a plane crash, is body washing ashore in neutral (but favouring the Germans) Spain where they were almost sure the secret messages would get into German hands.

To acomplish this, a body of a man who had died of pneumonia (similar autopsy results as drowning) was obtained. Around this man was built the life of Major William Martin of the Royal Marines. The body was dropped from a submarine (HMS Seraph) in a place were the currents would wash him ashore on the Southern Spanish coast.

After the body was recovered by the Spanish the British consul made every effort to have the body and the documents delivered to them before anyone else could see them. The body was buried in Huelva, Spain with military honnors and the documents were returned, apparently untouched, but intelligence found out that the message had reached the Germans and that they were buying the whole story. The fact his Sardinia defenses were strengthened and the invasion of Sicily was a success.

It was only much later after the war that the true identity of "Major William Martin" was revealed.

His grave in Huelva now bears both is real and fictional names.

Michael Glyndwr. 1/4/09 – 1/24/43.

Was a homeless Welsh man. He was found very sick after (possibly) accidentally eating rat poison.he was 34. It was later said that he died from pneumonia and that his family was notified. In reality his parents were dead and he had no known relatives.

In 1998 England revealed his true identity. His grave now reads Y Dyn Na Fu Erioed" "The Man Who Never Was"

I read the book when I was in Junior High School, before I saw the movie.

Well, I also read the book before I got a chance to see the movie.

Edit. The book was written by Ewen Montagu, who, as far as I know never wore a beard in his life.

It willbust you up as it has a lot of humor in it as they had fun creating a new life for this dead guy.

Gotta love the British humor.

Saw the movie years ago and got the dvd last year.Exciting and great acting. I also have read the book(s) telling how it was carried out.
Recently I visited The Citadel campus where the Seraph Monument is located. The Seraph was a British submarine used for a number of special missions and carried the body to the location where it was released. The same sub carried Gen Mark Clark to go ashore in North Africa to prepare for the invasion and avoid resistance. When he became President of The Citadel he learned the Seraph was to be scrapped and obtained the conning tower, wheel, torpedo tubes, Jolly Roger and other artifacts. I believe a special act allows the British Flag to fly there.
