The Missing Sock and the Bermuda Triangle

I can't explain it, you put your socks in the hamper or laundry basket, the laundry is washed and dried. Then when you put the laundry away a sock is missing. How does this happen? I mean it is not as if a sock puppet steals one to have a friend. Do the manufacturers add a chemical to one of them that makes them dissolve after so many washing's? Does one act like a Salmon and swim away with the water when the machine empty's the wash cycle water?

I have a theory, (unconfirmed) We all have read about ships that become stalled in the Bermuda Triangle. Some are never heard from again. I believe these ships become bogged down in tons and tons of missing socks. A tsunami of cotton, nylon, rayon, wool and synthetic blend that fouls ships propellers and clogs the cooling intake water screens. This leaves the ships at the mercy of unknown forces.

Of course I could be wrong but for now that is what I am going with. Other explanations are welcome.

It's alien abduction. If you buy these new socks that come as right and left foot you will find that only the right or left ones are abducted, depending on whether you are right or left side dominate.

I only have 2 colors of socks - white and black (for dress-up) - this system eliminates matching problems and if one goes missing all you need to do is set its mate aside until another goes astray which it likely will - works for me

Buy a lingerie bag. Put your socks in it when time to wash. Zip it shut. The whole bag, which is mesh, just goes through the washer and dryer and keeps everything together.

Great ideas! Now I have justification for buying 23 additional guns: the number of "orphan" socks on the shelf in the laundry room. Can't let them go to waste.

Seriously, it's the "parallel universe" concept that swallows them up. Except the socks don't reappear when the universes again align with each other. Another example, a WM employee who has sold me ammo twice, his name is Eric. Saw him again last week, same guy, his name tag now says Ron...

My cat usually steals mine and out of the hamper too. Usually I find the sock with a chew hole in it. I had to get 8 more pair two weeks ago.

If it ain't the cat stealing mine? its usually the gremlins doing the thieving.

I always wondered what happened to missing socks. Years ago, I had a female Rottweiler puppy. Noticed an increase in the missing number of short white sneaker socks I liked to wear. Usually let her out in the woods behind the house to do her business. Once, I walked her out on a leash because of some little kids that were playing in the woods behind the house. Noticed what appeared to be one of my socks departing the end that doesn't bark. Problem solved, and i'll leave it at that....
