I was not there, but have heard the stories about the script being swapped out unannounced in post war Japan.
As the GIs headed into the bases, the 'ladies' , bar owners and etc would stand on the streets going into the bases with grocery sacks full of script.
They would beg the GIs to take it in and exchange it for The new script.
So I think in the long run, hard items including silver coins would be more valuable than paper currency.
