The new currency: guns, ammo, gold and real estate?

I was not there, but have heard the stories about the script being swapped out unannounced in post war Japan.
As the GIs headed into the bases, the 'ladies' , bar owners and etc would stand on the streets going into the bases with grocery sacks full of script.
They would beg the GIs to take it in and exchange it for The new script.
So I think in the long run, hard items including silver coins would be more valuable than paper currency.

I'm not the least bit worried about any of that.

I'll just throw the saddlebags on the 'ole horse and ride off into the sunset...six shooters, lever gun, coffee pot, some beans, bacon and whiskey...

Yep, just ride the range...let them city folks worry about all that nonsense.

According to Mel Tappan, the big collapse should have already happened.

People spout this stuff because they can make some money at it. I have more faith in our great country than they do.

Psychologists say that our fascination with SHTF scenarios is emblematic of our desire to 'start over'. So we imagine scenarios where we are somehow more prepared, have more control, power, security or whatever than we have under our current circumstances.

If we just accept that it is all fleeting anyway, then, for me anyway, SHTF scenarios are just another way to daydream - like imagining you won the lottery.

Well I would have to learn to use leaches to draw off blood once a month to keep the BP down.

The only precious metal is lead or expanding brass based bullets.

If you have to leave your home for the mountains or a relative with land how are you going to get all your guns and bullets there?

I have 160 acres, cows, horses, plenty of wood, chainsaws and plenty of heritage seed to feed my family but if an army of 10K or 20K came sweeping into the plains from the metro areas how would I slow them down?

The show, "Walking Dead", might give one food for thought. There would be droves of others leaving the city to find food in the hills. The problem is, they are not zombies, they are gangs or your old neighbors who are also armed. One had better form a local militia quickly. Strength in numbers might give you a chance.

And how long would wild game last?

Wild game and individuals would be wiped out by the tsunami of survivalists leaving the big city in packs.

So personally I would prefer an orderly shut down. You know, our gov feeding the folks, water, electric and gas at every house. I think I'll re-read how well we did at Katrina to make me feel better.

I was into the gold thing for a while and I made some money at it, but I found that with having to pay bills I ended up just selling the stuff off at one time anyways. Now I look at the price of an ounce where it is and had I held onto it I would have lost money. The thing about gold is, you can't eat it, you can't protect your family with it. My advice for the future, is get one or two guns that are reliable I am not about to delve into calibers, etc. that's not for me to tell someone else. But get something in a common caliber in case you can't reload your own ammo. Buy things that you know are going to help your family survive. I attended a seminar last year by a former military survival instructor and he showed us how to find food and nutrition in the woods in 5 minutes flat. Things like Pine needle tea and others that when people will be trying to scrounge up a deer or small game they will be walking right by things that can save their lives. I think bartering might be the way to go, but who will you know to trust? Someone with starving kids seeing you are eating may have a whole new outlook on life and decides you and your family are expendable. I mean, look at how people act on Black Friday sales, imagine if that's life or death. Once the cities are done being emptied out of those who didn't die off immediately or were killed soon after the suburbs are going to look like locusts went through. I think people need to get food that will last a while and for crying out loud don't advertise. Gold and silver are fine, but I think it will be lead and steel protecting it.
