I swear this is true...

I had a man in to do a minor household repair today. He was a Spaniard, from Barcelona.

We talked a bit about Spain and about how many Americans don't know the difference between a Spaniard and a Mexican, etc.

He said that he was in a restaurant yesterday and some women at the next table were talking. One mentioned that the Olympics are in Brazil. No, said another: they're in Rio! :D Yes, there are people here who know that little of geography.

I've not paid much attention to the sports competitions. I did watch the famous, "Today" show on NBC today as Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima explained some Brazilian cooking, including some very attractive beef dishes.

Earlier, Mrs. Tom Brady (Gisele Bundchen) was featured, and was very humble about being asked to walk in the opening ceremonies. Those are my three favorite Brazilians, and I'd hoped to see them during the Olympic coverage.

I also enjoyed a segment where they sat at the same table in a café where J. Carlos Jobim composed, "The Girl From Ipanema" and they met the very girl who inspired that song, now 71 and a gracious lady. She was just 17 when she unwittingly gave birth to that music, one of the most recognized songs in the world. She said that she preferred Frank Sinatra's version.

Yesterday, Matt Lauer and a colleague sampled some local drinks. The lady seemed to have enjoyed them a little too much, but did manage to also stab holes in a coconut and insert a straw.

They have featured the huge statue of Christ the Redeemer from the mountain above the city and told about its construction. An amazing account.

Soldiers seen seemed to be armed with FN-FAL rifles which have been made in Brazil under FN license. MANY troops and police are evident.

Some of the national costumes have been colorful. I enjoyed seeing Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and the ritzy hotels. Alas, from one beach, you can see a favela (slum) where misery reigns instead of celebration.

On the whole, though, the attitude is festive and I've learned a few new things about Brazil. I abhor spectator sports and suspect that my enjoyment of the Olympics is about over. They don't show the shooting events, and I'll be surprised to see fencing.

Is anyone else here watching this?

Ray in Rio-

Are the Olympics televised down there? Are there things about Brazil that you wish the TV people would cover?

I feel sure that they won't visit Taurus or Rossi or have a tour of machete manufacture at Tramontina...nor will we see the manufacture of snake antivenin at the Instituto Butantan. That's too much to ask for. Maybe someday, on "Animal Planet."

Jim, where is the third party embarrassment emotion? It's sad the folks who consider themselves to be intelligent really know so little about the rest of the world. To split hairs, it’s not Rio it is Rio De Janeiro

Fred-

Not sure what you mean. Embarrassment from the woman who didn't know that Rio is in Brazil? People like that aren't usually embarrassed at their ignorance. By "emotion", did you mean to type "Emoticon"?

Yes, I know it's Rio de Janeiro. Used to be the capital of Brazil before Brasilia was built in the 1950's.
If memory serves, it's in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

I studied Latin American History in high school and have read more since. I occasionally talk to South Americans. I wish I could repeat here what the wife of the director of small arms production in Argentina told me about the way most of us up here view people from south of our border, but it'd violate a Rule. She showed me a nice video about the city of Rosario, too, where the Domingo Mathieu arms factory is located.

I think I can top the case of that ninny that my repairman overheard. I used to be involved in private security and for some years protected the estate of a wealthy lady whose daughter was engaged to a Spaniard. I met the man; he was from Malaga.

One night she asked me in all seriousness the difference between a Spaniard and a Mexican! Had no idea that her fiancé was European! He did work a lot in Venezuela, but that's another matter.

I explained politely, but have little regard for people with so little knowledge of history or geography. And it seems to be a spreading problem as schools teach less of these subjects.

I did suggest that she read, "A History of the Conquest of Mexico" by Bernal Diaz del Castillo, but she declined. Her taste in literature didn't extend much beyond, "Cosmopolitan."

No worries, though. She eventually OD'd on drugs and the streets are safer without her driving on them.

Oh: the man from Malaga broke off the engagement as he got to know the lady better.

BTW, I edited this topic since you first read it and quoted. I accidentally posted a rough draft that I was refining. It was originally addressed to our member Ray. I changed it quite a bit.

I always enjoy watching the Olympics and try to get a bit of education about the Countries.

Just wish the sports were still amateur and not Professional.

Why is Beach Volleyball a Olympic sport?

Golf? Tennis? Syncro Swim:eek: Sure there are a few other questionables

Being a old road biker I really enjoyed the Men and Womens road race. The climb and decent was unbelievable! Believe it was one of the hardest ever.

All have missed the really important question: What is the woman's name who inspired Mr. Jobim to write the song?

Best is Getz-Gilberto's long Jazz version.

1962 - Eighteen-year-old Heloisa Eneida Menezes Pais Pinto

Hi Texas - yes, the event is on the screen all the time.As for Taurus they are having a real bad rap here - several pistols malfunctions, jeopardizing police officer´s lives.
The only Taurus I own is a revolver, mod. 86 in .38 spl.
Just to correct you, the composer´s name is A.C. Jobim - Antônio Carlos Jobim.
And last but not least Felipe Wu a brazilian army sergent of chinese descent won the 2nd place in the air pistol competition, and the anti- gun media had to swallow it!
Regards, Ray

Sadly, it does not surprise me either. The other week I was at the post office, and they had a new person working there who was a college student. She had never heard of Detroit and did not know where it was. I kid you not.

It was also sad to hear some teenagers talking next to us during the July 4th fireworks that did not know the words to the Pledge of Allegiance. Our area supposedly has a very good school district too but they said they hadn't had to recite it since 2nd grade.

We are watching some of the Olympics like the shooting and archery events. I'm also watching women's soccer, men and women's gymnastics, Dressage and other equestrian events, some tennis. I'm sure I/we will watch other events as they happen. John likes the beach volleyball too (I wonder why). :) I watched some of the US vs Argentina women's field hockey. Knowing very little about field hockey, it was interesting to see how they play and the game was quite an upset!

The Olympics were originally military competitions in Greece. When revived in the late 1800's they were national military-based personal competitive sports. Lots of shooting events and physical prowess, including horse riding (yep, they didn't have tanks and Jeeps back then). Now the Olympics are filled with politics and who knows what.

I liked the spot about the "Christ the Redeemer" statue.
I have been fortunate enough to see some shooting segments.
The womens trap event, a mens air pistol event as well.
Favorite by far is watching the gals Beach Volleyball.
If they would get rid of the anti gun Bob Costas i could stand
more of it. And putting Ryan Seacrest on as an anchor will
get me turning channels real quick as well.
Some events are made for TV viewing while others just don't
play well as a spectator sport.
You can sure tell NBC is pushing their political agendas just
like on the evening News. I could do without that nonsense.
All in all it's switch around to the different channels until i
can find something i enjoy watching.

Kinda' weird deal with the water pollution issue there.
I don't know what they are going to do about the events
that are outdoors in water.

I watch the Olympics as many folks do : great to see individual performances in events such as gymnastics.

What we don't see is the discriminatory actions:

As an example: the people of Rio aren't allowed to ride the underground:,reserved for Olympic ticket holders.

As another, the Israili team was refused entry to their bus ( assigned by the IOC) by the Jordanian team to attend the opening ceremony.

As yet another example, a Jordan stllr forfeited a match to avoid an Israilian wrestler

Too bad we rarely get news about the in's and outs of these games.

Just to be a bit technical, Brazil was settled by the Portuguese, and it's the official language, not Spanish, although both Spanish and English are commonly spoken there.

Yes. A few years ago, my brother went to Sao Paulo on business and I tried to give him an English-Brazilian Portuguese dictionary and phrase book. He declined and had no language problem, as he stayed near his hotel and the host firm assigned a man to accompany him and translate.

I've read that many Brazilians resent that the best shops are mainly for tourists. The shops do have English speakers.

When I read that VS model Candice Swanepoel has learned Portuguese, I supposed that it was because she's South African and probably learned it to communicate with people from Angola and Mozambique, which border S. Africa and were once Portuguese provinces. (They called them provinces, not colonies.) But I learned that she's gotten engaged to her long-time boyfriend, a Brazilian model, and spends a lot of time there. One of her goals is to visit Amazonia. Some of her co-workers are Brazilian, so I suppose she got help with the language from them.

Many of these girls are multi-lingual, as they work in various countries.

I began reading about Brazil with Sasha Siemel's book, "Tigrero!", which told how he emigrated to Brazil from Latvia after Russia took over his nation. He was, BTW, an S&W enthusiast and wore one of their .44's in the jungle aa well as carrying a heavy spear and a Winchester .44 rifle. Brazil's gun laws were then much more relaxed.

Do the Olympics still feature a pistol competition? I think Patton won that early in his military career. A USMC major named McMillan won it in 1960, a gold medal. He used a Hi-Standard .22 auto. I really haven't kept up with Olympic sports in many years. I do see the appeal of beach volleyball. :D

Brazil is a huge country and has some regional dialects as well as Indian languages.

Chuck-

I'm glad that you mentioned Bob Costas. He's a person whom I will not tolerate on my TV. Even apart from the gun issue, I find him to be arrogant and abrasive.

Don't know about Ryan Seacrest. But he's a Hollywood celeb and probably also a gun hater.

Yes, quite the action in the road races. Did you see Nibali (Italy) on the ground and the crash of the Dutch woman who was leading the race on the big descent?
