"The Pacific" HBO miniseries

Was looking at the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo thread and ran across this poster, a reminder of what a total war in that era was like. It's a little different than today when our al-Qaeda enemies are just misunderstood muslims.

When I was a kid, in the early 50's. There was an episode of "something" Playhouse on T.V. that was an accurate description of the fliers capture, torture and bogus trial by the Japs. Followed soon after by their execution.

I got it for Christmas, and liked it very much. It's not Band of Brothers, however, the Pacific war was alot broader in scope and distance than the more compressed European Theater. I have read and reread "Helmet for My Pillow" and "With the Old Breed" many times, and I think the series kept the feel of the books really well. I like the attention given to Peleliu, an overlooked and largerly forgotten campaign until this series came out. They all have my undying respect for what they went through, it was hell on earth in the truest sense.

I had an uncle that was a WWII marine, he never would buy Japanese products, and it was hard to fault him for that after what he'd been through.

Take care...

I liked the series, wish they had taken a few more epiodes though to tell the story. Watched a few episodes with my WW2 Uncle who was a Navy UDT swimmer. FEISTY old guy, very colorful, gave me a 1911 with two clips in a paper bag for my 18th Birthday. Gotta love a guy like that.

Uncle Ed thought the gear and the uniforms were very realistic. And the episodes brought back quite a few memories for him. He had two brothers who were Marines during the war.

I posted a thread a few minutes ago regarding this being the 66th Anniversary of the assault on Iwo Jima. My Dad was there, with my uncle Ed's brother Frank with my Dad.

My Dad was witness to the second and most famous flag raising on Mount Suribachi. He stated the ships near the island blew their horns and sirens, and the men cheered. Talk about witnessing an amazing moment in History!

Semper Fi Dad.

Empathy

Band of Brothers=empathy, want the grandkids to watch it
The Pacific=some empathy, can't let the grandkids watch the episode with the sex scene. Too bad.
Can't ruin their image of a hero=their paratrooper uncle (my son)

The first 5 parts of "Pacific" were disapointing, but it got much better after those stinkers. Its almost like they fired all the writers and behind the camera staff and hired a new crew. Overall I'd only give it 2 and 1/2 stars compared to 4 stars for "BoB'
