The PC Recons were enhanced versions of the Shorty 9, Shorty 40 & Shorty 45. The primary enhancements were the front slide cocking serrations and the ambidextrous spring-loaded de-cocker. Additionally, the 40 and 45 included match-grade ported barrels.

The 9 RECON was produced in 1999 for RSR Wholesale with serial numbers NRC0001 to NRC0418 (418 total units) under Production Code 170140. It is Two Tone with a black carbon steel slide and a clear anodized alloy frame. Early production was shipped in a black plastic Doskocil Gun Guard case with a Gold Performance Center Logo Sticker and a S&W specifications label while later production was shipped in the PC Code Lockable Aluminum Case.

The 40 RECON was produced in 1998 for RSR Wholesale with serial numbers RRS0001 to RRS0200 (200 total units) under Production Code 170099. It has a stainless steel slide and an aluminum anodized frame. Early production was shipped in a black plastic Doskocil Gun Guard case with a Gold Performance Center Logo Sticker and a S&W specifications label while later production was shipped in the PC Code Lockable Aluminum Case. The PC Shorty 40 Y2000 is a similar pistol to the 40 RECON was produced in 2000 under Production Code 170164 to commemorate the Millenium. It differs only with a non-ported barrel and black finish with polished slide flats. The Shorty 40s and the 40 RECONS have flat slide profiles like the CQB models whereas most other PCs have contoured slide profiles.

The 45 RECON was produced in 1998 and 1999 for RSR Wholesale with serial numbers REC0001 to REC0603 (603 total units) under Production Codes 170098 (Matte Black), 170141 (Stainless), and 170128 (with RECON SWAT Knife). Early production was shipped in a black plastic Doskocil Gun Guard case with a Gold Performance Center Logo Sticker and a S&W specifications label while later production was shipped in the PC Code Lockable Aluminum Case.

Thanks for posting all those ads/flyers. I had some but now I have them all. I think. They will be a nice complement to Factory Letters.

Looks like someone could get all three at once seeing your WTS add. ;)

The S&W PC RECONS are amazing pistols! I’m fortunate to have all 3 in my safe!

That’s what I thought until it was pointed out to me that there was a stainless Recon 45 AND a black Recon 45. I’m still happy with just 3/4 of them all.

OK, we can remedy that. Here is the flyer and photo to the Matte Black 45 RECON. The production code is 170098 and IIRC a total of 603 units were produced without any separate totals by production code, color or knife combination.

I’m wondering how many of the 603 total 45 Recons, (stainless and black,) are still in factory configuration?

I know of five that have had the ported barrels bucked off flush. Maybe six but I can’t see if your stainless 45 Recon that you WTS has been shortened. It’s a small world so maybe yours is one of the modified ones that were done and owned by someone else that I’ve already noted. Maybe your image of it just doesn’t show the extended/ported barrel?

The Matte Black 45 Recon was the first of the Recons that I purchased, and at the time, I did not know much about the Performance Center models. I never shot it and sold it unmodified because of the ports. The dislike of ports was mostly because I was mostly blind in the left eye but was also a licensed pilot and LE. This made safety and protection of my right eye primary. Subsequently, I have had the ports removed from most of the 40 and 45 Recons that I purchased to keep for myself. The 40 Recon currently for sale is an exception because I did not get it done prior to the decision to sell.
