Found another way to hold the plug in place if you don't have the fork and spring. A spring hair pin clip:

Add 50 cents when you buy a plug or $2.00 by its self (POSTAGE).

I don't think I'd want a loose piece underneath the sideplate like that. That could cause some real headaches if it ever came loose.

Once it goes in it is hard to take it out, you have to bend up the pin to get it out. It fits right in the groves that the fork fits in, so it isn't going to come out .

Looks like a damn good idea to me! I removed the flag from my 686 but left the spring and fork, which I really don't care for. I might just copy your system. Looks like recoil could only keep it tighter.
