Somehow I knew it was going to be in reference that that you can't own just one.

Mountain Guns are a great concept and very pleasing to the eye. The problem with my 629 Mountain Gun was poor quality control on the part of Smith & Wesson. I bought it NIB and had the following issues:

1. The Hogue Round to Square Butt Conversion Rubber Grips didn't fit the frame correctly. They were for the K/L frame!

2. The pin holding the front sight blade would back out under recoil and this was with light 44 Special loads.

3. The center pin had a burr on it and would bind in the extractor rod, making it sometimes difficult to open the cylinder.

I was very enthusiastic about the gun when I bought it, but I ended up trading it in and taking a loss on it. Yes, I could have sent it to Smith & Wesson, but I was just fed up!

The only problem with Mountain Guns is that they do not seem to make them now, according to the current catalog, unless you count the limited run 629 MGs made for Cabelas last year, and the odd 6 shot 686 MG made for Lipsey's a couple of years ago.

The best of the series is the 629 (all advantages of the Model 24, but in stainless steel and 44 Magnum) and the 686+ (7 shots, stainless, tapered barrel and the standard ejector shroud). The 686+ Mountain Gun should be a standard production item for another reason. It is the ideal medium frame Magnum, no heavier than a Model 19 or 66, but much stronger, with the round butt L frame and the offset locking notches making the cylinder much stronger.

Are you listening S&W?

My only mountain gun isn't a mountain gun! It`s a .44 special model 24-3.
Its always been there before the mountain guns in .45 colt, .44 mag and .41 mag. That`s why they never made a official mountain gun in .44 special.
Mine does`nt have the logo. By the way, its my favorite packing smith.
The mountain guns do have the stupid round butt, but also have the tapered "pencil" barrel and the abbreviated ejector rod housing. Suppose to be a light version for hoofing it I guess.
If I suddenly didn't own any guns due to theft or fire, the first gun I would look for would probley be a .44 mag in a mountain gun or maybe 45 colt.

I want one in 45 colt...Think it would make a nice 50th B-Day present to myself...Now if I can just find one with no lock.

Just out of curiosity, what is the definition of a "Mountain Gun"?

Well in these parts, it's my S&W Mod 625-6 / .45 Colt...

Aside from that: 4" tapered barrel, black powder cylinder bevel, round butt, 1 of 5 calibers (.357 mag, .45 Colt, .45 acp, .44 mag, .41 mag), smooth CT, CH, pinned front sight.

As close as they came, they SHOULD have made one out of the S&W Mod 24 or 624 / 4" / .44 SPL also. Would have been THE LAST WORD, in the Mountain Gun series...

Mod 625-6

If they did the only change to the 24-3 would be the logo, round butt, and maybe the beveled cylinder. Along with that would be the lock.
