We have an Amana refrigerator that came with the 17 year-old house we bought last year. When the compressor is running, the noise is reminiscent of a C-130 doing an engine run-up out on the ramp. We also have a GE refrigerator in the utility room that is similarly noisy. The GE was bought new in 2007.

While shopping for appliances, they look attractive on the showroom floor, but you don’t know how loud they will be when you get them home.

The new appliances have energy consumption ratings on them. Is there any “rating” system for noise levels?

Any suggestions on brand, style, etc?

Do not buy an LG, or any LG appliance for that matter. Its noisy, vibrates, was replaced within 1 year(warranty) customer service stinks. Wish I couild tell you whats good, but I c an tell you whats not. My LG replaced a 4 year old GE. Where has quality gone??????

Let us know when you find a quite one. They have been forced by the Gov. To change the freon. Then they had to move the cooling coil. Don't know how they even work. Many don't after a couple of years.

The microwave is an LG. The turntable didn't work and I bought a new motor for $15 online and replaced it, so works fine now.

What a potpourri we have: Dishwasher is Kenmore, Microwave is LG, Electric Range is GE, and Refrigerator is Amana. I'm not sure if these are original from when the home was built, or if they are replacements over the years.

We purchased a GE 21 cf frig back in Sept 04, it's very quiet and we've had no problems. The replacement model is GTS22KBPBB, 21.7 cf, and retails for $ 1300. It has the Deluxe Quiet Design. You might check and see if the GE you have has this Deluxe Design, some of the less expensive models don't. If the new one is as quiet as the one we have we'll get this when we need a replacement. But since it's been nearly 9 years I don't know. Before the GE we had a Whirlpool but it was to noisy. And it was one of their better models. Good luck.

I have a whirlpool that made a little noise until I put a level to it.
Once I got it level no noise at all, don't even know its there, although my hearing is not as good as it once was.

Even when you compare the new models to that ones made 20 years ago, they all look like junk to me, I know someday I will have to purchase a new one.:(

The difference in energy consumption is really scary. I got rid of my old by quiet Whirlpool beer fridge and put in a new apartment sizes sears and paid for the new fridge with lower electric costs. I can afford good beer now.

We bought a Kitchenaid about 8 yrs ago and it is extemely quiet, really never even hear it. As a bonus feature I asked the salesman if Kitchenaid still had a ten year warranty on the compressor and he said no all are 5 yrs now. I checked the warranty and at the time of our purchase it was still 10 yrs.

We bought an Amana 7 years ago and other than the ice maker it is very quiet. In the instruction book they went to lengths to identify every noise you might hear and explain what it might be and to not worry about 99% of them.

I bought a plain, basic Whirlpool fridge at Loew's four or five
years back. Its been a good one. Pretty quiet except for the
ice maker. For some reason, I have never had one with an
ice maker. I'll never be without one now! There was a period
of adjustment necessary, as I'm a VERY light sleeper. Even
though the ice maker wasn't all that loud, it was loud enough
for me to be rolling out of the sack in the middle of night with
the Q-beam in one hand & the nightstand gun in the other. I
finally did get used to it.

Old Style ICEBOXES were the ultimate in QUIET.

Acquiring & Hauling he 50 pound blocks of ice was a pain though. :p

Thanks for the laugh! I remember going to the "ice house" with my grandpa and he would buy a block of ice, wrap it in burlap, and take it home to use in the icebox. That would have been in 1951. I think they got one of the "newfangled" refrigerators about 1953.

Here's a pic of mine. It's pretty quiet.
