The Shield and I get along just fine

I took my .45 Shield to the range along with my DW Silverback .45 and my Colt Competition 9mm. Here are the groups I shot at 8 yards offhand at a pace of a round every 2-3 seconds.

The Shield, 5 rounds:

The DW, fired for a total of 25 rounds:

The Colt, not sure how many rounds. "Until I ran out" is the count:

None of it is match quality shooting, but I was very pleased with the Shield shooting essentially a one hole group at 24 feet.

Nice! I've gone back and forth about buying myself a Shield for a while now. Can't decide between a 9mm or a .45 (or just break down and buy both)?

The answer for me (with the rebates) was "both". I went PC with the 9mm because of the trigger and the fiber sights. I mainly carry the .45 over everything else these days, but when I want to stuff something in my pocket, the 9mm with the short mag goes.

Get both. They will not disappoint you. Especially with the rebate running right now. The shield 40 has me wondering if it needs to added to the collection. But I have feeling Smith & Wesson will be changing over to the new style and the 40 might be a more shooter friendly gun.

Exactly. Even at the price point before the rebate you'll never lose money if you decided to sell later on down the road, and the rebate is just icing on the cake

I bought my Shield 45 without having shooting one first. I did my research but only got the feel of one at the LGS. My first shot at the range, bulls eye. Second, third bulls eye. Magazine dropped, I fixed that, Bulls eye. Put my Glock 19 on the nightstand for house duty and now carry the Shield.

I handled a couple shields and felt this would be my next CC gun. Took the plunge and bought a 9mm. Finally got to put about 50 rounds though it. About 15 of each, Hornady Critical Defense, WWB, Blazer Brass; can't express how happy I was with each shot. Not much recoil and it ate everything. Excited about my next range trip.

The brass overexpands and will swedge itself in the chamber and lock up the slide.

At heart I am a 1911 man, and have been since I was 8 years old, 51 years ago. But I have no sense of betrayal of my roots, because I will always be a 1911 man. I am a 1911 man who prefers to carry a .45 Shield as primary and a 9mm Shield as back up.

The thing that still surprises me is how easy it is to shoot the .45 accurately at 25 yards. A compact plastic pistol is not supposed to be able to do what this can do.

Cheap guy that I am, I started out shooting my M&P 9 with the cheapest ammo I could find (Aluminum, Tula, etc.). Eventually, I started having second thoughts about the long-term impact of steel on internals.

I'm very fortunate to have a large online ammo distributor in my town who also permits will calls. Given that this guy can shoot anything in his huge inventory, I took it to heart when he told me he shoots White Box. Since then, I've been buying mostly CCI brass that runs just $2 more per box than the Tula.

I run brass. I like to get it at TargetSports or Ammoman. Ammoman will re-bag stuff thats been dropped during the month and broken open (un-sellable) and they get pretty right on the pricing. You have to watch closely for it though cause it goes very quickly. Usually shows up once a month and last a day or so. Usually at or just below bulk case pricing but free shipping over a hundred bucks so you dont have to buy sooooo much (pkg in 100 round lots)

Steel doesnt hurt your gun particularly because its poly coated. HOWEVER, I feel over time the poly will leave residual in the chamber due to heat/friction and require a serious cleaning. Just my opinion for sure YMMV

I think about stovepipes. Now, while it rarely happens I can only think that if it DOES then I want gun parts slamming down on softer brass rather than steel. Like in the double loads with a M&P15 where it bends the case itself (about 20-30*) what if that was steel and not brass? I can see a downside. I rather damage a round than damage my gun/bolt/slide/chamber.

Have a look at my go-to guy. He has an amazing inventory, shown in real-time, so there are never backorders. With the exception of an occasional loss-leading promotion from other ammo dealers, I've found his prices to always be either the lowest or close to.
