Location
Texas Gulf Coast...
Went down to the docks to buy 10Lbs of fresh shrimp
for this weekend.
Owner was behind the counter talking with a worker
and was holding a Smith 65.
I commented on the gun and he advised "well it is better shape
than the old one" and he produced the pictured Smith.

I asked what he was going to do with the 28 and he stated he
paid $250 for the model 65...so....that amount would buy the HP.
Sold.

It is rough...will make it a project gun.
Bore, lock-up, timing all great
Any suggestions ?

The stocks have to be worth $50 to $75, maybe more if they aren't too rough looking (can't tell a lot from the picture). The finish on the revolver may look a lot better after some judicious cleaning, maybe give it a good waxing. In any event, the finish was never meant to be gorgeous. If it shoots fine you did great.

Another rescue story in the works!

I love this site, I'll be watching what happens to this Highway Patrolman!

Good score in my opinion, I would have bought it too.

Xfuzz, I just noticed you're in Galveston, I'm in Clear Lake a little north of you.

Last time I went to buy fresh shrimp off the boats all I got was a lighter wallet.

;)

Lucky day for you, way to go!

Cool gun. Cool story.

Please, please...
Do a clean up as per post #2 and post the resultant pics!
I'd love to see the change. I bet it turns out surprisingly well!

Thanks,
Jim

Nothing beats an affordable project gun that you can't hurt. You can only improve it. Since a nice 28 is worth quite a bit more than your rough one, I'd have it sprayed with a good bake on finish. Maybe even a stainless look.

If I got that 28 for 250 I could justify a little work on it. I would take it apart and bead blast the frame, side plate, cylinder and extractor rod and lightly sand the pieces with 600 grit wet dry sand paper to the desired finish and have a local gunsmith hot blue it. I would polish the trigger and hammer and have them color case hardened again. Maybe 450 tided up in gun at this point. As for the grips, put them in a coffee can and cover with acetone and let them soak for 3-4 days and every so often scrub with a tooth brush. Let them dry out for a day or so then light sand with 600 grit paper and either Tung oil or Tru-oil finish them.

Sorry I could not just clean it up and let it go.

That's a cool gun and great buy . It will clean up nicely a great candidate for a reblue or park job . You said the bore is great so you are good to go.

I would check it mechanically, clean it, shoot it.

Soak in some automatic transmission fluid for a day or so and then give a good scrubbing with bronze wool. Stay away from steel wool.
See what it looks like then

^^^As I was reading your initial post, I was thinking just this.^^^

In years gone by, I always regarded the Model 28/Highway Patrolman as a project waiting to be worked on, but in recent years the selling price on them has gone wild. My opinion now is that you've gotten a rare opportunity here and if it were mine I would shoot it as is (after the cleanup described above) until and unless I found some really great project to use it on. It's original now and can only be original once, so I would think and plan and study on it until that perfect project came up... or you could sell it to me and that's what I would do with it!
